I am new to Mongoose Traveller, but I am looking at starting a game this fall. I was wondering if anyone had thoughts on converting Traveller to the Mass Effect universe? And if someone does think it could work well, how about helping stat up the various aliens and planets?

Excellent! I loves me some Mass Effect, even if I'm still playing it on consoles.

The only problem with the Obsidian Portal one is that it doesn't have rules for shields or changes to starships. I am considering expanding on that one and adding in rules about spaceships. I will post it when I finish for you guys to look over; maybe you'll be able to tell me if it's balanced or not.

Ok... looking through the rules on Obsidian Portal, I have a few more problems with it. The shields/armor are balanced against existing Traveller combat armor, but the armor is severely weakened; and the shields only work as an extra layer of armor that goes down each shot. If we want to base it closer to the Mass Effect 1 universe, then shields have an HP of their own, and protect from all damage. However, if we use ME3 rules, then the shields work both as armor and blocker, depending on the amount of damage done (i.e. with a sniper the shot can pierce the enemy's shield, doing damage to both the user and the shield). To this end I think I'm going to do a massive overhaul of the conversion rules on Obsidean Portal. I will make a new post with the changes I have made.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with, Joe. I'm trying to work things out for a Mass Effect Traveller game myself and any help would be great. Is that something you're still working on?

How would travel work in mass effect using traveller rules?
In traveller it takes weeks to get to the next system, but in the mass effect universe you just cruise out to the mass relay and jump instantly......
This could be problematic as this downtime during travel is typically spent on training skills - which takes ages in traveller.
House rules required to offset this IMO.
This is actually the only issue I can think of off the top of my head - almost everything else sounds like it is easily done by reskinning.
