Agreed. I've always had a hippy-dippy Think Globally/Act Locally mindset with most shit I'm interested in or give a damn about. Must be my ecology background. I know that if the rest of the world decides pen and paper RPGs are a waste of time they will fade away and I can't change that... But at least in my quaint, local, sea side, drinking village with a fishing problem, Deep One infested community of Homer, AK... I'll have fun running games for people who would have never tried them otherwise. And yes I mean Lucky Pierre the RPG. *stands up on pedestal, dons Malcolm X glasses* Jackercon was a nice reminder that this podcast and gaggle of loony collective has many individuals (myself included) that aren't able to attend "flesh space cons" (god damn it I can't believe thats a thing...you lil' fucker ) or their prospective groups don't want to play a variety of different games. I am still pretty amazed at the sheer number of new people I got to 'hang out' TM with and different games I got to play in...to me thats Growing the Hobby. I remember as a kid getting White Dwarf magazine and scratching my head with the realization that people waaaay over in England were playing RPGs although I think they rolled the dice with their left hands or something similarly bizarre. Now, I've been able to swagger around as a clueless, ego saddled samurai and fight Margaret Thatcher with 'em. That's growing the hobby. I have played a Don Quixote inspired bard with a horrible accent while some guy in Brooklyn, New York played a pubic hair pulling dwarf with a bad scottish accent...while some guy in Osaka, Japan wondered just the hell was wrong with us. That IS GROWING THE HOBBY! Now I may have had too much coffee...AGAIN. But I see the light my brothers and sisters! I KNOW that we few! we happy few, we band of brothers...(and sisters Bill...) Shit...what were we talking about ? Oh yeah... JACKERCON 2013 PART DEUX "WE WEAR NO PANTS!" NOVEMBER 8, 9, 10!(although the theme choice may not help the first impression of using the name Jackercon...ah fuck it Now where did I put my coffee mug??

I think they created that episode for you and she (who shall not be named lest we summon her sockiness). Basically the summary is: Stu wants to run a FATAL game...and hilarity will ensue...with calipers.

My GenCon is now over, I couldn't go any more my tank was bone dry and I just had to get on the road. I'm home now and relaxing and I had a freaking blast. I met FreeRangeGamer and RobMITC of Monkey in the Cage and also met our friendly neighborhood C-Teamer muntjack

OMG HJ breaks new ground - no. 1 podcast, moved successfully to vid-blogging, Jackercon as a fixture, now they're going to actually run FATAL. THIS should be the ENnies entry episode . . . Cause I'd love to see the judges faces contort with rage on listening. Aaron

When I had to scrounge for FAE players during JackerCon, The First. That's what I get for scheduling up against D.T. Pints.

It is funny to me how as a group we gamers scramble from one game system to another based on what the current buzz is about.
Waiter: What sort of game would you like Sir?
Player: What is the game du jours?
Waiter: Well Sir, we have a very nice Fate game made just today, the L5R was made fresh yesterday, the Savage Worlds game is a little stale, and the 4e game is now covered with mold and we're going to use it either as a biology experiment or to make vaccines when the zombie apocalypse comes.
Player: Hmmmm ... I think I'll have the Fate game ...
Waiter: Would you like that Cored or Accelerated Sir?
Player: Cored please I have time.

ADHD - short attention spans easily distracted by the new shiney. Being one of the 'cool kidz' at university, when I was much younger and slimmer, I shall pointedly avoid Fate until all the hysterical knicker wetters have dispersed onto another 'thing'. It's a bit like the 'One Direction' dizzy fandom nonsense at present. . . I'll stick to my garage bands and those that actually play instruments . . . when One Direction have broken up and 3/4 of them disappear into jobs at the local chippy and the few remaining actual talents sweat blood to produce a genuine heartfelt magnum opus I'll give them a listen. Aaron (says he who has just agreed to play in a 4e game . . . with one caveat: no fucking DragonBorn)

I really think IF the hobby grows thats great - but there aint much I can do for that, it is largely down to game companies and how effective they are at producing games worth playing and getting them out there. I care, it just isn't my job. I could NOT disagree with you more. I think the onus for growing the hobby lands squarely on our shoulders. Its too niche for the companies to be able to do much. Most of the smaller companies cater to the audience they already have, or to the audience thats already receptive and "in the know" they don't(and can't) target the little guy who knows nothing about them. Bigger companies like Paizo can(and do) market to the little guy, but even that is very small in the scheme of things. No, the bulk of growing the hobby is up to us... the ones in the trenches. If we blow it off as someone else's burden we'll quickly find ourselves with no games to join and no books to read.

I think the number of opinions and posts again proves the point: great topic idea. Maybe during the show, Stu and folks can read off some of the main points we've seen here to add some conversation, such as: Are we responsible for this? Does it need ambassadors? Yes and no and why. For those that feel a responsibility, what ways can we help do it? New games, which games work well for noobs, boxes vs. one-offs/con games vs. ? etc. Read more: happyjacks.proboards.com/thread/2457/growing-hobby?page=1#ixzz2cXlyuSld
