I'm going to disagree with something stork said. I know. Shocking, right? Around the 30 minute mark while you guys are still discussing encumberance, he says something about (and I'm paraphrasing here) "being a dick GM because "You want to run away, but you're really exhausted from carrying eight sets of platemail'..." Sorry, but fuck that. I'm not being a dick GM by telling a player they are slowed down when they try to run away because they're carrying eight sets of platemail. I'm sure it was just an off the cuff comment, but it bugged me. P.S. - Looking forward to having stork tell me off at Gateway 2013. I agree about the encumbrance BUT I think you misheard Stork - I thought he said it wasn't being a dick GM if the guy is carrying 8 sets of plate mail that you decide to impose a penalty? Aaron

Hey! My letter about that Gygax quote was the starting point for another topic. Excellent. Just take anything out of AD&D and you have a conversation, since everyone has an opinion about it. BTW, I think Gary was quite fat at the end of his life. I wouldn't call him a hippy, though. He was rather portly throughout most of his gaming career and an inveterate chain smoker . . . looking thru some old Strategic Reviews and the implied use of marijuana (by implied I mean subtle like a brick to the forehead is subtle) by many of it's correspondents I'd say that if Gary wasn't a hippy then he knew a metric fuck ton of them. It was 1974 after all . . . the world was different then . . . Aaron

All the discussion of the first edition AD&D DMG and Gygax on the show and here on the forum finally got me interested enough to read some of the damn thing.
I now know where all those shitty antagonistic DMs got their ideas. Lots of hilariously bad advice on interacting with other humans. Why talk to your player outside of the game and explain your issues, when you could passive-aggresively punish their character in the game?! Through pain they will learn and become a Superior Player.
I am enjoying all the High Gygaxian and random charts though.

I am enjoying all the High Gygaxian and random charts though. I went back and ran a 1st ed game at GameX before last and when I started re-reading the books I was going, "Why did we play this again?" Then I ran the play test and I remembered why. We played it because it was fun though to be fair we did through out the high Gygaxian and the antagonistic bullshit. Cheers, JiB

I would just like to say, that the distinction between Handwaving and Ignoring is the exact phrase I was looking for to explain it to my friends. I've been trying to find a way to put it so it didn't look like I was favouring certain rules in games I get to play in over others, and this podcast helped me come up with a way of saying it without sounding like a douche.
Of course, I still can't recommend this one to my friends thanks to the copious amount of FATAL, but hey, you can't win them all.

Isn't that precisely why you should recommend this episode to your friends - broaden their horizons and other things (provided the calipers are good and sturdy) Aaron

Aaron Unlike maxinstuff I've been wrong before, and I'm sure I'll be wrong many more times in the future. So if I misheard or misinterpreted you stork, then I apologize. I know you constantly get shit from us forumites about stuff you say on the cast. However, it really does sound like you're said the GM is a dick if they rule a character is too exhausted to run away from an encounter because they were carrying eight sets of platemail. Maybe I'm missing some context, but if one of my players insists of lugging around eight sets of platemail, you can be damn sure I'm going to say their character is too exhausted to run away from an encounter. Just a little heads up for anyone playing in my Dungeon World games at Gateway 2013.

...I would play FATAL at Jackercon provided it could be with Kainguru and maxinstuff, because I see that game going off the rails and into a pit of gimps pretty damn quickly...

I want to be (virtually) sitting next to AzureTalon for that Jackercon FATAL game. He would own that shit. But I don't think I want to be sitting at a table playing that game though - it'd be too fuckin' hard to make eye contact with y'all.
And just to throw it out there, 1st Edition D&D actually did have race-based armor sizes. Human/half-elf/half-orc, elf, dwarf, or gnome/halfling.

Stu, if you really do end up doing a FATAL game, I would love it if you recorded yourself going through character creation for the first time.
