I was looking at playing a Pathfinder game at a game store here. They are running Pathfinder Society. I know a little about the game and making characters. I created a Pathfinder Society number a while ago. Didn't create a character because there were no games close.
Would like to know about creating a character. Specifically "what level" or do does a player have to start at the beginning of an adventure? Can a player jump into a campaign? It's my understanding that there are different campaigns going on throughout the year, worldwide.
I have made a character and played before, so the mechanics aren't an issue. This post stems more from just getting started and understanding how the process works. Thanks for any help.

If you haven't read the link JiB posted, do that.
But to summarize: Characters start at level 1, using the point buy system for stats. You get 20 points.
Item creation feats are not allowed. If your class gets one for free (Wizards get scribe scroll) check the guide for what replaces it.
Most PFS games are one shots, that you can bring any appropriate level character into. They have tiers of character to determine what you can and can't play, and lower tiers offer premades if yours is too low. You then apply the chronicle to your character. You level up every 3 games.
Occasionally, a GM will run a campaign for PFS advancement. These have to be the Pathfinder Adventure Paths, and you get loot the same way you would in PFS one shots. You get a chronicle sheet, and can buy any of the items you have access to, rather than "I killed that guy, so I get his sword." It's a rule designed to balance all players, it makes TOTAL sense, but I hate it.
I'm looking at running some pathfinder society games this winter when everyone I normally play with is fuck-off busy. I'll look into the possibility of running them online, if there's interest.

Jackercon! Currently no pathfinder games being offered.
If there's an evil wizard that sounds like Christopher Walken that shit will fill up in seconds!
