Hey there Happy Jackers,
So, last night I was playing in my Wednesday Night Google+ L5R game, and our party went through a REALLY interesting plot involving a missing child, a couple of Shadowlands Creatures, a giant sink hole, and a complete lack of any equipment aside from daishos and fans from the PCs. (The PCs had been a social event designed to introduce one of the PC's little brother to his future wife when all hell broke loose.) All in all, it was a very fun game.
Now to the question. At the end of the game, I assumed that our characters would get at least 2 Glory for defeating the Shadowlands baddies. One point for the public bragging that the Scorpion did and one point for the skirmish with the monsters. Unfortunately, we only got the glory point for the public bragging. When I asked the GM, the answer I got was, "You don't get glory for defeating Shadowlands monsters." When I asked him where that rule was, since its pretty much all the Crab do in their spare time, he said that he found it on one of the official forums. Has anyone else come across this same rule? Does it make sense to anyone else? Wouldn't this make what the Thunders did (Twice) more of a moot point? What about 20 Goblin Winters?
Ready... Set... Discuss!

I really feel like it is situational dependent. Save a large village from an ONI or troll, yea gain glory if they witnessed it and they know you saved them.
Kill some smaller shadowlands creatures with no witnesses, no gain aside from bragging.
Glory isn't something guaranteed from killing things, but something that rises when people talk about you.
I'd have rules you got glory if you all saved the missing child. Or many witnessed you slaying the shadowlands creatures.
As for your crab example, to me they likely would not gain glory unless it was a monumental creature. I mean all crab samurai have to go beyond the wall and slay a creature merely for their gempukku, so big whoop, you did what is expected of you.

One BIG thing to remember about Glory is tht you only get Glory when someone of higher status than you decides to acknowledge it...publicly. Or as Joe mentioned, if you do said thing in a very public manner. So if someone of higher status hears your story of what you did and decides to say "Yeah that really happened." then you'd get more glory for it.

Knowledge of the Shadow lands is generally considered distasteful by most of Rokugan. Indeed much of the empire is in denial of its existence.
I personally would be very cagey about rewarding samurai for bigging up their exploits when it comes to their contact with it, lest they come under suspicion themselves.
Of course all of this goes out the window when it comes to the crab clan who of course have to deal with proximity to the Shadow lands daily.

I know it's not the best resource, but the glory chart specifically mentions gaining 1 point for winning a skirmish, but I would still require the caveat that people have to know that it happened.
Doesn't matter if it was a Troll, Oni, bandits, goblins, or other samurai. If it's known about, it's rewarded. And Like SirGuido said, if higher up people hear of it and acknowledge it, you get more.
