I'm relatively new to Traveller, I played in one con game and have been reading the books for Traveller (1st E) and Megatraveller, and I have to say that I LOOOVE the idea of running a game in Megatraveller. It seems a lot like Traveller with more options for world, ship, race and starsystem creation.
The only thing I liked more about OG Traveller is the Roll 8+ rule, which in Megatraveller, is a little more complex. Any Traveller vets who are interested in discussing the merits of the different Traveller rule sets?
I have PDF's of Traveller 1stE, Megatraveller and GURPS Traveller(But i dont have any GURPS core books), but I am aware of Traveller 5 and Mongoose Traveller.
I want to weigh the pros and cons of the different versions of the system to try and only have to learn one new rule set, sell me on your favorite version of Traveller.

I only have the Mongoose Traveller, mostly because it's adaptable enough and flexible enough to do everything I want and more, really. Mongoose Traveller is just plain elegant in the way it handles stuff. It never seems to bog down, it never seems to get ridiculously slow, it never gets in the way, it just works. I can't tell you that Mongoose is better than any other Traveller version. But it's the one I have, the one I like best, and the one I play all the time

I played in pretty much every set of rules except 5. My main GM owner every set too. IIRC we thought MegaTraveller was our least favourite. Or ... was it New Era? Mmm
Anyhow. As a player, I think Mongoose is the best distillation of all the versions.

Can't recall to be honest. It was years ago. And as I remembered half at through my last post it might have been New Era

New Era had the radically different mechanics scalped from GDW's 'Twilight 2000' Aaron

MegaTraveller, the edition I started with, is basically a condensation of old Classic Traveller from 1977 with many of the supplements included. Since the combat system in CT was kind of wonky they did a new one, and they redid the space combat system and starship generation systems based on one of the gearhead supplements from Classic.
It was a great attempt at unify a system that had gotten unwieldy. Sadly it was marred by lot of typos and pages of errata. But, with all that it was a solid system. All those fixes are available online, naturally.
The setting in MT basically was the great Imperium of the old game, but they introduced a civil war to spice things up, and it ended up just being mutually assured destruction which did nothing good for the game.
Rule wise, I think MGT is a small and neat package and probably the best starting point. But, MT was something more, it was everything in one boxed set. I still own three copies of MT...
