Just saw it...YES! Might as well be an L5R AP. Amazing to see a non-Western fantasy come to life like that and be so close to how L5R reads/feels.

Yup. Saw it yesterday with the kids. Nothing like the actual Japanese story, but a LOT like Rokugan.

Just seen it and once you get into the second half of the movie actually quite good. Definitely a good Rokugan, enough supernatural to make it fantasy but without going overboard.

The wife and I were going to see it tonight, but the only showing that worked time-wise was 3D, and we can't stand that. Good to know I should keep looking for another showing. I'm currently working through the L5R novels. I've made it to the Phoenix one and I'm jonesing to play L5R, I've got it on my amazon wish list at the highest priority. hopefully it'll come through for my birthday in Jan.

Would those that have seen both; say that it was better or worse than Desolation of Smaug ? I just saw Smaug last night, and my wife commented that Peter Jackson must have been playing a lot of D&D or Skyrim after reading the book. Because apparently the subtle aspects of Tolkien's story, like dialogue...were just less interesting than some REALLY EPIC video game-like scenes.
Don't misunderstand I LOVED IT! But I just don't get the desire to let amazing visuals steam roll over the really engaging aspects of a story. Can't we have both ?
Oh wait...I forgot about Sharknado. Come on Academy, don't fuck this one up.
I'll be seeing 47 later this week....
And I'll start a new thread so as not to spray HOBBIT all over the L5R threads...

Shorter than The Hobbit, and thus better No. In fact, it's more "slight" than the Hobbit, and I sort of wish more time was spent on the individual characters among the 47 Ronin, just as Jackson and co have added more story for the individual 12 dwarves.

The 47 Ronin movie is to the actual events what 300 was to the historic battle of hermopylae. So if the changes Frank Miller made in the movie bothered you, then don't see this movie. Otherwise, it was a lot of fun. And super pretty. Also, Keanu Reeve's character is completely extraneous to the story, and could be removed entirely without changing it in the slightest.

Interesting views. I'm looking to see 47 Ronin ASAP. And yes am hoping it can be used as a good film/visual resource for my players in L5R. Particularly as I have a newbie player joining in two weeks.

So many great japanese actors and filled with lush scenes full of color and incredible costumes. Its about time that some of the lovely fantasy stuff coming out of China and Japan came to the US. Since China now owns our country for the most part, hopefully more of these films will make their way to the screen. I couldn't help but see Stu Venable as the stoic Shogun with his opulent golden wardrobe and constant stern expression. I kept waiting for the war fan to come out and start flapping. This has to be the first american film where the really stranger aspects of asian mythology made it onto the screen. From tengu, ki-rin, and of course dragons (spoilers!). And don't worry Keanu haters...he dies at the end. (Your welcome.)

I ended up holding my nose and watching it in 3D, because I missed the non-3d showtime on the day I went to see it. As always, a mistake. The movie was still pretty decent, though.
I did chuckle a bit at the dialogue obviously written to inform the ignorant gaijin savages. Like when the shogun says, "I now order you to commit seppuku. Ritual suicide, to absolve yourself of honor, so that your family will not live with the stain of your disgrace..."

"And now we are ronin...which are lord less samurai who are no longer samurai ...and a samurai is..." -yep one if these days they'll just have a Japanese movie spoken in Japanese and make the fuckers read subtitles. Which is how I prefer them anyway.

Unfortunately, I bet we're in the minority on preferring subtitles. Most people seem put out if they have to read anything longer than a Facebook status.
