Encumbrance IS an optional variant. A brief overview is in one of the 'sidebars'. I expect PHB or DMG will expand on it The variant in the basic set discards armour STR values required and replaces it with total encumbrance. Aaron

Page 9, last paragraph of Choose Equipment has encumbrance at 15x your strength stat. Apparently there is more info in Chapter 7, but I haven't made it that far yet.

The free Basic Rules just saved me about a hundred bucks.
It seems like a perfectly competent system and there are a couple of new mechanics that I really like. They've blended healing surges with hit dice which is a nice blend of previous editions. It should make PCs hardier, but not impossible to kill (though I never had too much trouble in 4e). I really like the advantage/disadvantage die. Roll 2d20 and picking the higher or lower is a great math-free mechanic. Even my wife liked the idea.
However.
I've always played D&D because that's what people played. I've had a great time, and had a couple multi-year campaigns in 3.5 and 4e that had character depth and kickass heroic action. Reading through the Basic Rules, I was bored. I couldn't bring myself to care about the new version of D&D and resented that a lot of the material seemed to be copy/pasted from 3.5 right into the manuscript (equipment and spells, I'm looking at you).
Is it a good game? Undoubtedly. Is it a necessary game? Not for me. For a low-prep, high narrative, I have Dungeon World. For crunchy D&D with the serial numbers filed off, there's Pathfinder. For a sweet spot in between there's the fantastic 13th Age.
What do you guys think? Do I have D&D ennui? Should I be invested in 5e?

I dont think its unreasonable to say "I dont need this" i would argue its not a bad thing that some things are just like they were before one of the bad things about 4e was that they seemed hell bent on changing everything. So having spells that some what look like spells should in dnd i am happy with that.
I am also hesitant to make any sort of judgment based on how bored i would be playing the Basic Rules i dont think i have ever played a pre made module without feeling some what bored.
I am excited for 5e because its new dnd, i will keep playing Pathfinder but its nice to have a DnD that is not this alien mess of crap that i hate that was 4e

I haven't sat down and read the ENTIRE thing, but unless the later test packets were completely ignored, then the boredom probably comes from the "basic" aspect. The fighter presented in the basic rule set is really boring compared to the amount of choice and special "fighter only" mechanics they had set up in the test packets. Which makes total sense because... well... "basic"
But yea, its perfectly fine to feel like you don't "need" 5th. Personally I'm hoping to find it between 13th Age and Pathfinder so I don't have to patch in my favored 13th Age stuff into Pathfinder. So that's where I am right now... I feel like I'm outgrowing/bored/whatever with 3.5/Pathfinder as a GM, looking at the more narrative heavy games and wanting to add SOME of that in... but not willing to give up the parts of D&D I and my players love. In all likelyhood, this WILL be a battle for my D&D of choice. I tend to choose my flavor of D&D and stay devoted to it. When I chose 3rd, I never again played 2nd. I did not go back to 3.0 once I got into Pathfinder, if I get in to and love 5th, I probably won't go back into Pathfinder(I'll still use their books, fluff, and adventure paths, I'll just adapt them).
I see a lot of people doing the double game thing, where they have their crunchy D&D and then swing to the other extreme and have their narrative D&D, and a middle ground doesn't suit them.

So far, it looks good. The layout is clean, easy to read. Mechanics should be solid. Advantage and Disadvantage is easy to understand. I would play it. I would need to be pretty impressed, "oh, shiny!", when I see the actual books to buy them. This reduces my chance of running it to almost nil. That being said, I really liked the DnD 4E DMG. So it may end up in the library.
(edited out what I'll probably be playing instead b/c off topic)
But I do enjoy/use the WotC stuff as fluff. I still have a love for Dark Sun. (ducks, and speaks quietly) and Spelljammer.

Never apologise for SpellJammer - it's a fantastic setting and time it was acknowledged by its fans. We've been bullied into being apologists by a vocal minority for too long - give SpellJammer more love . . . Aaron

I heard SpellJammer was secretly written by Kevin Sembieda.

If that is true, he should shout it to the heavens as his masterwork.
... might explain the Giff. I bet they were supposed to do Mega Damage!

WHAT IS WRONG WITH D&D IN SPACE ?!?!? (Phew sorry got my Spelljammer fanboy hackles up.) As far as this community goes, 5e probably won't do anything too new or revolutionary. But what I love about it (from what I've seen so far) is thinking about being that 12 year old kid walking into the local bookstore and seeing the Red Box for the first time. Hasbro will make sure that shit is everywhere and marketed like a freight train...thus it is a GREAT thing for the hobby. Hopefully it will also be a game that is fun to play and that my wife's bookstore will happily carry and sell many copies. And I will happily run introductory games!

I hadn't thought about that. It will be good to see it get a 'push' from Hasbro. I would love to see at least the starter set in Target or someplace like that. You shouldn't always have to go to the back corner of the Waldenbooks (dating myself there) to look at RPGs. off topic=> Spelljammer is awesome. In fact, I just bought 'Skull & Crossbows' from drivethru/rpgnow/dndclassics whatever skin you want. It is sweet!

5e probably won't do anything too new or revolutionary. Honestly i think thats a very good thing , they tried to do something revolutionary with 4e and ended up with ... not dnd.

Well my wife ordered FIVE! copies of the 19.99 $ starter set. I don't know how it will go...with the Pathfinder Beginner box just 10 dollars more we got cardstock mini's and a battlemat. But I plan on running a weekly THIS IS D&D game at the bookstore for all those little smiling faces that say "Hey Mister...whats Dungeons & Dragons ?" As an old jaded, salty dawg I'm actually looking more forward to running Edge of the Empire intro games. That shit is so damn easy to pick up and those gimmicky dice get players thinking like GMs from the first roll. Much like all the Apocalypse World games the cooperative story telling is built right in. Hopefully 5e has learned a thing or two from these more collaborative games. But for now more SPACE HIPPOS! Man I love Spelljammer. As a matter of fact Jackercon V will be the All SCI FI con...(with horror thrown in cuz it will be just after Halloween). HIPPOS IN SPAAAAAAAACE! (whats not to love?)

I've been tempted to run newbie games at the local place for quite awhile. Maybe this is the time.
