So For some time, on and off, the board has talked about converting L5R to AW. and a while ago I mentioned my friend, Brennan Taylor had worked on and designed his own hack for his own home group.
Well this weekend at DexCon, I was finally able to play in his game, that he's been tweaking and running since 2011.
Now let me say this. I love L5R. I adore the setting, and the flavor and so much about that game. When my friend introduced me to Roll and Keep, I fell in love with that.
Brennan even said I might not like the game he made, because I love L5R so much.
I love his game ore than regular L5R. I love it so much, I don't think I can ever go back to playing the regular way. All of the crunch, and I'm sorry SirGuido, but there is a lot of crunch vanishes, and the game becomes so fluid and fast moving.
Combat broke out in the two games we played only briefly, and it was over in two rolls. And in both cases, the Aggressor, was thoroughly and utterly shamed by their actions.
The one single thing that makes this game so great is something Brenna came up with, and the is the fact, that every PC, has a Secret Love, determined just after character creation, but just before play. The Secret love, and the love roll connected to it, make the game into so much more, and tragedy and so much joy can occur, in game and out of game.
For example, in the First game, I was playing Kakita Inoue, the Crane courtier. She was secretly in love with Matsu Satomi, a Lion Berserker, who was Inoue's Aunt-in-law.
There is the Dungeon World Relationships, called Insight. Inoue's that I had determined before I chose Satomi as my secret love, was that I knew Satomi's heart's desire.
Satomi's hearts desire, was that she was in love with her own cousin, Shosuro Niezen, a Scorpion Courtier.
When gameplay started, Satomi ended up being portrayed as a monstrous witch, unlikable in almost every way.
But I was in love with her, despite her actions. In fact when I was first able to chat with her, I made my first Love Roll. I managed to pass that (for this you want to roll 6 and below, unlike normal). When ever you pass a love roll. You mark 1 love in the box....ever love roll after that you add +1 for ever love box you have filled, as you bottle up your love, it becomes harder and harder to suppress your feelings for the object of your desire.
by the end of the night, I was wrapped up in creating a haiku in dedication to my love, and drowning away my sorrows in sake as I pined for my love.
Anyway, the plan was to Manipulate the Scorpion to marry me. Just so I could ensure the lion would be around, so I could seduce her. As a side note my character had not realized. The Scorpion marrying me would mean he would be closer to my sister, who he was secretly in love with, and she was also secretly in love with him.
Plans quickly changed when my love tried to kill my sister after the Matsu was challenged to a duel, and the Berserker savagely attacked with her wakizashi. The entire funeral party rushed in to see her wrestling with my sister, the wakizashi still stuck in my sister's shoulder, as the Matsu roared and tried to kill my sister again with her warfan. I broke my own characters heart, when I shamed the Lion so badly, that I made her lose even more face, and forced her to with draw from the room, and i said it in such a manner she could not challenge me to a duel (It was my rank 2 school ability, 3 choices out of four on a 10, 2 on 7-9 (last choice is target makes a rash statement or promise))
Needless to say Brennan kept looking to me and jokingly tell me "You're character is so fucked up right now." And He was right. and it was amazing.
In the second time we played the scenario we were actually able to deal with the original plot, and this time i played the Kakita Duelist book. who was Secretly in love with the Scorpion Courtier. And in incredibly random result, (The Scorpion chose their love by rolling a die, and it came up on me) The Scorpion loved me too.
The Scorpion's insight for my character was that I had potentially compromising secret about her. I determined it would be more fun the know that she prefers the company of other women, thus giving my own character hope.
The first time we met were were both alone together. and the GM said. oh? You two alone together. Yea roll love. 7-9 and we both chose the same thing, and the scene ends up like "Oh Niezen-san...oh um...Oh there's a thing...I have to....sorry...." and both of us immediately turning away flushed and fleeing one another.
The second time we interacted, I wanted to try the "Read a person" move, because of our previous interaction. and I find out she wants to know what my feelings are, that she's currently Nervous, and that she really wants to talk alone with my sister. So the woman I love that cares for other woman, is currently nervous, and wants to get my sister alone and "talk" with her. SO MUCH HEARTBREAK! SO ROKUGAN!
The final time we run into one another alone I'm supposed to be searching for her cause she may have attempted to steal from our estate. But my goal is straight up to seduce her, and take her into a private room for tea. I even had my handmaiden gussy my up all gorgeous like to give me a +1 forward for a seduction/manipulate attempt. Nailed it, but she still mentions my sister. I purposefully brush her arm and tell her "I kow more about the type of person she would care about, than my sister ever possibly could."
Love rolls. 7=9 for me, I choose "I let slip my emotions, and Someone of the GM's choice notices." She rolls a 12 and chooses "You break down and express your love to the object of your desire" and the player does it in the simplest most perfect way possible. She reaches up and unmasks herself before me. Then i pull her into the room. And because of my roll, every one sees us enter the room together, thus finding out about my Secret.
The second session had so many people revealing their loves, through rash statements, horrible rolls, and painfully wonderful scenes. The Lion in that game loved a crab shugenja, and arranged her marriage with the shugenja's older brother (the best part is the marriage was arranged while the shugenja player was taking a bathroom break, and he wasn't told what happened while he was gone). The Crab older brother loved my character. My sister loved the Crab, that loved my, my sister found out the Crab loved me, and started being a huge bitch to me. the Crab shugenja loved my sister. No one loved the lion.
when the Shugnja found out about his arrnged marriage, he shamed himself so much, his brother abandoned him, and slapped him and told him to do his duty. The Shugenja reacted with calling forth the kami in a fiery explosion, charring his brother, the lion, and himself.
IOn the end the Shugenja while being pinned down by the lion and berated for his childish antics had this to say to the lion (who was at love 2 with the shugenja) "If you ever loved me...please...kill Me". The Lion mjust barely succeeds in her love roll and growls back "You have to live with yourself for this."
And in the end. The Lion and crab were married into the most miserable marriage possible. The Lion blaming the Crane, because it happened in the Crane house. The Scorpion made out best being repaid a life debt, and being able to get together with her secret and forbidden love on the downlow, not to mention the promotion her clan gave her for other things that happened. And the Crane and Scorpion strengthened by an alliance.
HyveMynd, being the residne tAW/DW expert love, I'm not really sure what your feelings on L5R, I think you should check it out. SirGuido being the resident L5R lover, i really think you should check it out. Likewise for you Stu Venable, I know it might be a new system all together for you Stu, but the sheer tragedy and chaos that will befall upon your players is so glorious.
I know his current stuff is not yet updated with the rules and moves we played this weekend, and I'm going to hound him to update, and when he does, you can be sure I will be back here to tell you all.
