The Gencon podcast you are talking about is called This Just In... from Gencon! Some local folks who are no longer local did it the year I was the DoucheyDM correspondent. They did an Indiegogo campaign to fund the 2012 version but nothing since. thisjustinfromgencon.com/

If anyone is intrigued by the discussion of Better Angels, the super villain/ demon game, it's part of an ORE bundle of holding: bundleofholding.com/index/currentJust two days left.

There is a part in this podcast episode where there is a discussion of Player vs Player situations and someone mentions wishing for a game that would allow for greater depth in dealing with these situations and there is already a game that does resolve this kind of stuff perfectly and that's the Cortex Plus Drama system, aka the Smallville RPG. Which is a game that is specifically designed around that kind of Player vs Player drama, which I am thinking should be renamed Character vs Character. Also, this is the first episode I have listened to with you guys and I think I am going to have to go back and listen to previous episodes now.

My $0.02 on social conflict
** Before anything else happens both parties must decide what will the result be / what is at stake. Clearly this will be different if we are talking about chatting up a town guard vs. using a type of mind control power/spell. -- I believe Burning Wheel does this -- We will call these 'the stakes' It didn't seem like Stork was clear on what the stakes for his Presence attack was.
town guard example => 1) stakes: PC success = guard helpful for PC to get in town (" I can't let you by, but the guy at the next gate could use some spare coin"). PC great success = guard facilitates PC into town. ("sure thing mate, c'mon in"). PC fail = pound sand stranger. success/fail can be adjusted by 'leverage' bribery, intimidation (if there's a guardhouse nearby this could hurt your chances). etc.
super power/spell example => 1) stakes: PC success = foe will do what PC says if reasonable for that foe. PC great success = foe will do what PC says, pretty much whatever. PC fail = foe knows what PC tried, will probably target that PC with next attack.
Certainly you can use your other skills to try to figure things out. Perception: the guard's clothes seem in ill repair, and it seems the 'tax' to get into town is quite variable... (might be susceptible to bribery) etc. That doesn't really matter for spells/super powers.
TLDR: know what it is you're rolling for. If the system doesn't make it clear, then you make it clear for crissakes.
Pre-gens/character sheets. QAGS has a place on their sheet for 'WWPYITM' I hate the acronym, but it's "Who Would Play You In The Movie". - Why clearly it would be Keanu Reeves from Point Break.

The Hillfolk/DramaSystem conflict resolution is a bit more nuanced than explained, and I think it offers a great way to enhance social conflicts betweeen characters without stymieing the action moving forward. The token mechanic mentioned gives the character acquiescing to the demand of the other 'plot power' in a future scene- similar to Fate points, but not quite. Often there is an impasse, which is resolved by characters having dramatic poles, which are desires that can be fundamentally opposite. For example, a paladin's dramatic poles could be Defend the Weak/Attack my God's Enemies. When it comes to kobod baby slaying, the paladin could want to destroy the infernal spawn, but shift to protecting the babies without destroying the plausability of the character- given proper motivation. This might be a bit hyperbolic, but you get the idea.
The dramatic poles concept + plus 'plot power' for allowing your PC to be swayed = a nice solution to the heel-digging-in that often comes when people 'are just playing my character' and are unwilling to be swayed in any way.

Mentioning Shadowrun (especially 5th ed) in the same breath as Rifts in terms of terrible systems physically hurts me.

In regards to Con one shots and player size.
I'd have to say that some of the best con games I've ever played in had a minimum of 6 players at the table. And for half of those games we created the characters at the table.
Maybe this also has to deal with the systems used like FATE core, and all the various Powered by the Apocalypse games, but because of the amount of players, there was a lo more Roleplay between all the various characters, and even some times certain characters never interacted with one another, which was still cool.
That all being said, having run L5R for 6 people at a con. It is doable, but slows down when you get into mechanics.

Stu Venable, off topic with regards to games, when you record your Boggards tracks do you have the whole band playing and just have separate inputs for each vocal/instrument or do do you lay down a track at a time, with a basic backing track, which you then mix down in post? Aaron

Aaron Most of the time everyone's tracked separately, though sometime two or three vocalists will record at the same time. For this CD, we did scratch tracks with zouk, mando and drum and recorded them live, but they all got re recorded.
