Hey there, Jackalopes and forumites. I'm a new listener and after a few recent episodes, I decided to start at Jan 2014 and catch up from there (I'll go back to even older stuff when I catch up), and today am listening to the episode where they're talking to the stinky crabber from Alaska. It was mentioned that people are shocked when they hear of people drinking and cursing while gaming. Well, I just happened to have taken a photo from our Deadlands game last night: Yeah, It's been a long time since I was a pre-teen playing D&D during lunch at the Catholic school! I'm going to enjoy my time with friends, and all that entails!

I'm much more enticed by the beholder on the wall back there! Good drinks, whiskey and all its cousins are always invited. My last group didn't typically drink when we used to game, a few beers but not much liquor. Most of the players who drank at the table would very quickly lose their ability to decipher even the most basic game rules. My core group (whose been broken like the triforce) plays under the influence 100% of the time but the groups been shattered across the east coast. We used to have 2 drunks & 2 stoners, we'd all do our thing and just game for hours, but alas both our drunks were banished (one to another state and the other into the marines). Those were the only 2 people i've gamed with who can handle their drinks and still play.
I would take a pic of our table next time but our table is only decriminilzed around here (>.>) and the gaming area is not nearly as nice!

We have an unspoken rule at most of the Happy Jack's tables (and podcasts that aren't live), "Drink, don't get drunk".
There are a few stories about drinking to excess at the table, and they are all to the detriment of the actual game. Everything in moderation.
That said, I'm envious of your bottle of Hibiki. I don't drink enough whisky to justify buying myself a bottle, but whenever it's offered, I never turn it down.

Fortunately, none of are players are the types to overdo it. Usually we just have beer, but because it was Deadlands, the host brought out his bottle of High West and others to go with it. I think I had the most to drink that night, but luckily my wife was willing to drive home. The beholder is just one of the heads. The host (pictured photobombing)remodeled his house and built in a game room, complete with secret door made out of a bookshelf. There's faux wooden beams on the walls and ceiling as well as lanterns (with electric bulbs) to give it a tavern feel. The walls are lined with "stuffed" heads (made out of paper mache by his aunt): dragon, beholder, ogre, mindflayer...and something else...as well as weapons. It's pretty damn cool. The Hibiki was very nice; I hadn't had it before. I don't like smokey/peaty scotches (I prefer Irish), but that had just enough to give it some good flavor, and is quite smooth.

Beer. Lots of beer.
One time in a Star Wars game when Lando made a guest appearance I handed out Colt 45 to everyone...

I learned very long ago that if we're all drinking to excess while gaming, we're gonna have some wacky, weird fun. If just one guy at the table drinks to excess while gaming, the session quickly turns to utter shit.

Never split the party applies to getting hammered as well.

Welcome to the forums weaselcreature! Hope you've enjoyed yourself so far. My group doesn't often drink while gaming. I can't speak for the others, but for me, I prefer to enjoy the game without any other distractions. Sometimes I crack a tallboy of のどごし or two while gaming, but that depends on how serious things are. For a lighthearted wacky one-shot, sure. But for something like a regular campaign game (and my God, it's been forever since we played one of those), it's usually some kind of soda or green tea. That's not to say we forbid drinking at our games, and we wouldn't prevent someone else from doing so if they wanted to. Maybe we're all just really cheap and don't want to shell out for the booze.

Likewise, I've found a little drinkie, and a little other stuff, all works out well, but too much of the drink and it devolves into chaos. I learned my lesson one time GM-ing and running the players through a scene twice. They were all confused as shit when suddenly they were back at the town leaving... again. Everyone left at the end, and just in time for me to go upstairs and pray to the proverbial porcelain god.
I fortunately had recorded that evening, and used it as an embarrassing lesson on how NOT to GM a game.
That said, when it comes to the Saturday 8pm Dread games at Strategicon, I am always happy to get slowly wasted over the 3-4 hours. As is the GM, who becomes a bloodthirsty motherfucker and pits all us PCs against each other for Jenga tower after tower of death. Good times...

Our group never drinks while gaming; we have two complete teetotalers, and nobody else feels strongly that alcohol is an expected part of a social gathering. We have wacky fun anyway.

I'm a grown up, so I (and others) often have a beer or two without any noticeable change in behavior. Because it's delicious.

Oh yeah...the wacky fun isn't created by the alcohol! Our main GM doesn't drink when he's GMing, but does when he plays.

I have no problem with people having drinks while they play if they want (and are safe going home). I never have anything because.... i kinda just don't drink so I don't ever really have any booze around. I smoke like a busted stove though, on the balcony where that goes.
