There's a big deal on what looks like the original Traveller "little black books" at Bundleofholding.com. I've also heard a lot about Mongoose's edition. I think there are two or three others as well. So, if I want the traditional "Traveller experience", which one should I be looking at? Which one is going to show me what people like when they talk about how much they like the game?

I'm personally all about Mongoose Traveller. I like that rule set the very best. I don't know if that counts as the "traditional" Traveller experience, though.
The big thing the "original" Traveller brings to the table is the fluff, as I understand. So, even if you'd rather play with Mongoose's rules, you can get a whole lot of benefit from the little black books if you're interested in the canon world. Which, I like the Spinward Marches even if I usually run my games in my own house universe.

If you really like old rule books and their general clunky-ness (I do), black books. If you prefer streamlined and well tested systems, mongoose.
They are similar enough that all the books in both lines play reasonably well together with minor finagling.
I think both work equally well. Don't worry about any other editions.

Mongoose, though the LLB deal does get you a lot for a low price. And they're not THAT clunky

Looking over the whole deal, you can have all the Traveller bundle of Holding stuff for 18 or so dollars, and at DriveThru you can have the Mongoose main rulebook for about 24 dollars, so if you wanted to you could have everything you could ever want to try out Traveller for 52 dollars, which is the same as 13 fancy chocolate bars or 10 really big lattés. Just a thought

When we talk about it on the show (as to what we're playing), it's almost always Mongoose Traveller.
