Hi, this is my first post here, looking for any feedback from JiB or other FATE aficionados in residence. I know JiB is familiar with some of the basics of this as I've asked on Metagamers Anonymous podcast, but here I'll lay out some specifics.
I am shortly going to run a one-shot game in TSR's Masque of the Red Death gothic horror setting (though funnily enough an adventure also patterned after the Poe story). This setting emphasized magic that was more difficult to learn and cast than other D&D worlds and also carried a risk of corruption by evil just by using it. I have among my pregens two magic-using characters whom I want to be able to distinguish from each other in the way they use magic.
The first is Marie-Madeline Molier. Her high concept is 'True-believing Spiritualist'. I see this character as having started off her career as a charlatan, a spiritual guru to the rich and famous. However, after a genuine experience with spirits she retired from the public role and started studying occult lore independently. Now in middle age, her ability to interact with spirits is advanced. Her other aspects so far are 'Obsessive-compulsive with wards and lucky objects', 'The whispers never cease' and 'Trusting relationship with the Brigadier' (another of the pregens). Her sixth aspect is still undecided. Her skills are as follows:
Great (+4): Magic/Occult
Good (+3): Crafts, Empathy
Fair (+2): Will, Deceive, Rapport
Average (+1): Notice, Contacts, Physique, Shoot
Marie's stunts so far are 'Lie Detector (+2 on empathy to discern lies to you or someone else)' and 'Friendly (+2 rapport in small, intimate groups)'.
The second character is Anna Sophia Schmidt. Her high concept is 'Consulting Occultist'. She is a younger woman, in her twenties. Publicly, she is a very opinionated scientist. However, she is also a trusted agent of a secret society, a cabal, steeped in ancient occult lore. Her other aspects are 'Open contempt for the Order of St. Malory (a Church-sponsored monster-hunting cabal)', 'Veiled Eye of the Watchers', 'Keep an eye on Henry (another PC)', and 'Magic is dangerous where science will serve'. This last one is somewhat about her views on Marie. Marie is perhaps more willing to use magic than Anna. Her current skills are as follows:
Great (+4): Science
Good (+3): Will, Investigate
Fair (+3): Magic, Athletics, Crafts
Average (+1): Contacts, Provoke, Resources, Shoot
Anna's stunts are 'Concentrated - use will in place of provoke when dealing with less educated or experienced persons' and 'Details - On a successful Investigate roll, create of discover a previously unknown aspect about a scene, object, or person'.
I have no idea about length limits on posts, so I will put what I'm looking for on magic in the next post.
