As advertised I went to Chupacabracon 3 this past weekend and it was a load of fun. The most of the Savage Worlds crew was in attendance and had the pleasure of playing in Shane's Deadlands game. My wife had chance to play in Sean Patrick Fannon's Rifts game, a game which caused SPF to leave the table (in a good way) several times because the player rolls were obliterating his enemies and adventure.
The Con itself is still in its infancy and it definitely showed. There weren't that many booths up and the staff were often times a little impatient and frustrated with attendees. The bar didn't open until 5pm, and there was no overnight gaming allowed in the main room. Luckily the whole event was very low key and people weren't jackasses for the most part. The tables stayed mostly clean but it was pretty clear the cleaning staff just gave up halfway through cleaning and went home.
I ran two games, one was Ninja Burger in the Feng Shui 2 system and the other was Savage Super Powered Murder Hobos. Both ran well except I botched the ending of Murder Hobos. I had based the adventure off the first episode of TMNT and at the end of that episode the building the Turtles were in fills with water and almost kills them as the building is destroyed like a popping balloon. I hadn't figured out how to run that particular scene in my prep so I decided to run it as a group Dramatic Task...except the first card drawn from the deck was a club. I played it as is telling the players about the "worst possible outcome" effect of Dramatic Tasks, but the result was merely a "Save VS Death" effect during the ending of what was generally a great session. Two out of the four players "survived" with their Hobos and made it out but I was open about not being happy with the ending when I opened up for feedback at the end. All in all it was a great session that I'll be tweaking and running in future games. I also made the mistake of including powers that only worked on living things when primarily the party was fighting robots. Which lead into another problem of not having any primary villain that the players faced. They adventured and got all that way and the Ripper (Shredder) ended up getting away. All in all I learned a lot and a good conversation at the end of the session made me feel like the players didn't leave too upset.
I'll definitely be going again next year and might even try to run something at GenCon when I go in 2017.
