This past weekend I attended DexCon in Morristown, NJ, and I was playtesting my hack of Fate Accelerated, for a Swashbuckling/7th Sea inspired game.
I got some really good feedback, which was awesome, and all the players knew enough about their characters just by looking at their Aspects and Stunts, which was great for me since I designed the pre-gens. Got some good compliments that despite similar stats, the characters each felt unique.
Things they loved: Fan Mail. Fate normally doesn't have a fan mail mechanic, because it would break the fate point economy, but I love Fan mail, and when other players say to a player "That was Awesome" I want them to be rewarded for it. This was inspired by original 7th Sea and it's rewarding of Drama Dice, and I directed the awarding to be player focused, based off of Prime Time Adventures (which I've never read or played), and Golden Sky Stories (Which I have played, but not read).
The first play test, the players spent fan mail a lot more than the second, but both groups loved it regardless. I'm working on some ways to remind Players to feel free to spend it, because the second group just left them on their character sheet, and may have forgotten about them at times. A central Pot, that everyone can see might help with this.
The 3 Approaches I created were loved by the first group, and the second group thought it felt too small, and the only thing they could suggest adding was something related to 'Power', which I don't think is a prime aspect of a Swashbuckling hero, but I can see that being used in Aspects, Stunts, and clever use of the Cunning Approach.
The Approaches: Charming, Cunning, and Daring. Daring I feel might be too vague, but once I work on more examples for everything, I think things will clear themselves up.
In the beginning I never once thought about designing a setting, or a game, just wanted a fun system to play the swashbuckling Three Musketeers stories I love, and now according to several designers, based on some of the work I've already done, I'm being encouraged to fully flesh it out and write it for the Fate Codex...so that might become a thing. Yay?
Anyway, if you wanted to check out the Pre-gens, I posted them looking for feedback in the General Gaming sub-forum, It wasn't until much later I realize I should have posted them here.
