Hello folks, Came back from Big Bad Con last week, which was up in the SF bay area here in California. Used to be in Oakland, this was the first time it was in Walnut Creek at their Marriott. This was my favorite con of the year, and that's saying a lot, because the cons this year have been pretty fantastic. The real summaries are below in the blogs, but I'll just say that it was amazing hanging out with such awesome players and GMs and games. I got to play 3 PbtA games that I had Kickstarted, but never played before: World Wide Wrestling, The Warren (i.e. Watership down the RPG), and Legend of the Elements (i.e. Avatar the Last Airbender the RPG). Each was amazingly good, in different ways. Also got to do some ad hoc gaming which included a run of Dread, Cheat Your Own Adventure, and Roguish. All very fun. Here's the deets: Anyone else got stories to share? I know jazzisblues and gina went, not sure if anyone else from the HJ forums??

It was my weekend for all PbtA all day.
Friday 2pm: Masks - Even if you don't care about playing teenage super heroes (Who doesn't want to play teenage super heroes?) you have to play this game, it's awesomeness is beyond words.
Friday 8pm: Sagas of the Icelanders - This game was spectacular and emotionally harrowing for me. I did what seemed like a good thing and it all turned to ashes and caused other people difficulty because of me. It was amazing even if it was painful to play. (( I absolutely MUST reiterate that the pain was of my own creation, this is possibly the most amazing game I've played all year ))
Saturday 9am: Bad Streets This was a really good game and I was generally pleased with it. Because it was three of my principal play testers it was more of an analytical game than just a run of the game. Got spectacular feedback and some really great ideas that solidified some things that still needed work.
Saturday 8pm: Blades in the Dark - This was a really good game of a truly GREAT game system. It was a lot of fun, but there were some Blades beats that I think we missed on. Still in all, it was a lot of fun.
Sunday 9am: Bad Streets - This is episode is what Bad Streets is supposed to be. It was great. all kudos to my players. I couldn't ask for better players, we had a great episode that went super dark super quickly and was a bunch of really screwed up characters.
Big Bad Con is always amazing. Sean hits all the beats with what he does. It is entirely gamer centric and all about the attendees. Add into that, the hotel is amazing. No, it's not the most lavish hotel on the planet, it's very nice and very comfortable, but it's the people and their attitude that makes it great. I overheard the night manager telling the front desk crew, "ALL that matters is our guests." I don't know if they have a policy against having outside food, but if they do it was never an issue was never even mentioned and the hotel didn't seem like they would have cared. Take all of that and add in some of the very best gaming on the planet and you have a recipe for a spectacular game con.
Other notes of Big Bad Con awesomeness:
Spectacular dining all around the hotel, and if it's within 1 mile of the hotel they will take you there for free. Friday morning we went to a neat little place called Katy's Kreek for brunch, I had corned beef hash and poached eggs and G had cheese blintzes with berries. Nom nom nom ... The Trappist Beer place with the little pizza place next door ... not to be missed ...
