I started my rpg career with GURPS.
Other people said it was to complex, but it was the first system I "got". Other systems didn't let your wizards wear armor for arbitrary reasons; GURPS was the system that made me understand that you could experience any kind of story - with any kind of character - through the RPG medium.
But after 4:th edition rolled out, I felt a little alienated by the system and Steve Jackson Games. It felt like the company's only passion in life was to print carbon copies of Munchkin with different names on the box. I moved on to experiment with other systems, even old behemoths like Dungeons & Dragons.
Lastly, I've mostly played some obscure system called 'Uncivilized Locales' or something. But now I have returned to my First System of Choice and I'm reading through all my GURPS books to run the massive Masks of Nyarlathotep-campaign in the system... and it feels wonderful to be back!

But I have to admit, it's a humbling experience trying to be a GURPS gm.
Me: *picks up the basic set* Time to reacquaintance myself a little...
GURPS: *grabs me by the neck and slaps me in the face* DO YOU REALIZE THAT YOU'VE MISUNDERSTOOD HOW COMBAT REFLEXES WORK ALL THESE YEARS, PUNK!?!?!?
Me: I've missed you to, GURPS.

TFW you open GURPS and realize you were wrong. That was me and ranged combat penalties a couple years ago.

My time with GURPS was short, but sweet. I've been converted for life. My players were eager to try something less cyberpunky and more D&D5e so we're enjoying that, but there's so much GURPS prep getting done for whenever I get to run another campaign, it's nutso

I'm just now spinning up a new GURPS campaign after a... good grief, 24 year hiatus? I think the last game I ran in GURPS was 1993. Eeeep.
I'm reading 4th edition now that I actually have the first book. Hopefully get my old group together via Skype or PBeM/PBP.
