I picked up the Horus Heresy humble bundle recently so I'm on book one of that at the moment. Unfortunately it's not grabbing me in the way that the Gaunts Ghosts books did.

I thought someone here recommended Drake: The Burned Man #1 by Peter McLean. It was associated with the Dresden books, in that it's a wizard in the modern day, taking care of questionable tasks for unsavory characters. Unfortunately the main character is an unpleasant person, as is the titular Burned Man himself. It's likely that there's a character arc planned with some redemptive chances and moral pratfalls, which is maybe crediting the author a bit too much. Drake is a fallen, weak, whiny, reprehensible character who is surrounded by people who treat him with an appropriate lack of respect. By the end, it was improving, and on Goodreads the 2nd book is higher rated than the first.
I just remembered I also was not fond of Dresden for the first three books, so I'll eventually grab the next one of these.

The Early Germans by Malcom Todd, Ahoi aus Hamburg (Dino Lernt Deutsch #5) by André Klein, and (yet again) Dr. Jeffrey Forgeng's English translation of Tower Manuscript I.33 in preparation of a revision of our school's student primer on the sword and buckler.

I just started re-reading the Stormlight books by Brandon Sanderson. I've been working on reading what my wife is like our own personal bookclub. So I'm re-reading since it has been years since I read the first one "Way of Kings". I forgot how great these books really are.

Night watch is his best book imo. I agree, but Thud!, since becoming a parent, has a special place in my heart.

Night watch is his best book imo. I agree, but Thud!, since becoming a parent, has a special place in my heart. And I'm reminded why the audiobook version of Thud! is less than stellar. There's a few parts where Vimes is... well, beyond furious (no spoilers). The reader doesn't really rise to the occasion.

I'm reading Stephen King's "IT" for the first time ever. I like his stuff, but I think I peaked on enjoyment in a single-sitting reading of The Eyes of the Dragon. Or maybe the first Dark Tower novel. In any case, at least I won't have been caught out like this person, who apparently read a fanfic version of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: twitter.com/shelzhang/status/884496110454288384
