OK, so we had our first session (we only play monthly) and I had a grand total of two players because I had to change nights due to work schedule. It worked out because it was a lot less to keep track of. Then again, the group consisted of a tattooed monk and a water shujenga.
I am running in an era where there are no official tax collectors and it falls on the magistrates to do it.
I will tell more of the story when it is not so late but some learnings and highlights included:
Wow. Monks with bamboo tattoo and high reflexes are hard to hit. This shocked the monk character more than it did me.
Reversal of Fortunes is an awesome spell.
I was worried at first but I should have made the bandits tougher. I think. Maybe. Maybe not. The shugenja took a little damage but that was about it. Then again they felt threatened even when it was a lone lookout bandit with a knife.
All in all, it went well. They enjoyed it. I had fun running it. At the end the players wanted to call themselves the inevitable because they were death and taxes.

OK, so they met their boss, a Scorpion magistrate. All I had for players was the tattooed monk and the Unicorn Shugenja. Being new players to the system but skimming through the book the scorpion boss make them nervous.
So their magistrate assigns the two, along with the peasants Thuc, Jun and Boton to take a cart and go collect taxes from the neighboring villages because the Imperial lands in this area stretch out beyond to the mines to the west along with fields to the north and south.
First town goes well. Everything in order. All I have to describe tax collection is my memory of watching Outlander so even though it is scottish my players don't know the difference and it works. The shugenja is treated with extreme respect and mild fear, which chafes at the good natured samurai, while the monk is welcomed with less trepidation.
Village headman admits to monk that they are short rice for taxes and explains that they have been extorted by bandits for wheat and when they couldn't give anymore the bandits took the rice. Monk checks out area where rice was stolen and quietly lets the samurai know what is going on, since they suspect there is a mole in town.
Monk uses wolf tattoo to find and follow tracks in the soft ground, though it gets harder going into the hills/mountains to the west of the village. Soon they come upon a sentry who has not spotted them. Shugenja tried to knock Sentry off of small ledge with an air vortex and fails. Sentry runs. Shugenja, who is rather fast, runs after sentry. Monk tries to follow.
Shugenja draws blade and catches up to sentry. A knife fight ensues with the shugenja getting injured but winning. Monk catches up but does not interfere in the fight.
They track the only path the sentry was going down (wolf tattoo had expired by then) and found a cave where they see light coming out of it. Basically, the two PCs charged in and started swinging. the head bandit thought at first it was the sentry coming until the monk rounded the corner and punched him in the jaw.
The PCs quickly overwhelm the bandits and the shugenja executes the gravely injured bandits.
they find the missing rice, but not the wheat. it seems there are different tracks leading away from the village but towards the city.
Monk and Shugenja get rice back to illage, saying they were just helping the headman collect the taxes.
All goes well and they return to the city of Kosaten.
Sorry if this seems dry but I am writing entirely from memory.
Game is only played once a month, so next time I should have full compliment so they can be introduced to court....

They are LARPers very heavy into role play and wrench throwing. I have only ever LARPed with them so it is interesting. No wrenches yet.
