Link here: community.wizards.com/dndnext/blog/2012/04/20/backgrounds_and_themes:_a_closer_lookThis is one of the first things I've read that I really like about 5e, and in fact I remember house ruling something similar into 2e when I was a teenager. Basically your choice of background gives you some skills, feats, etc. Then you pick a broad "theme" for your character that is sort of the same as a background in game mechanics, but respresents your "now" instead of your past. Then at 6 you choose another theme, either maintaining a further refining of your original, or you choose a new one. This continues on regularly at certain levels. It also reminds me a lot of Traveller, and a few other games that load some character role play at the start of the game and into some mechanics. Generally I hear this type of thing appreciated on the Podcast(unless it is done to the extreme). What do you guys think?
