i never thought it would happen. but a powergamer like myself is actually enjoying the act of Whitebox D&D on Sundays with a GM named Grixit.
i played 3 Sessions over 2 Weeks. including a Wednesday one shot
my Elven Thief has 13 Dexterity, 13 Constitution, 12 Wisdom, 12 Charisma, 10 Strength 10 Intelligence and a Single Hit Point because i rolled a 1 on that d4. i rolled shite on Starting Gold Too
Little Miss "Nightshroud" literally got potion rezzed from unconsciousness thrice so far. and EXP hasn't been Distributed yet
but i contributed to 4 Kills
2 5HD Dwarven Bounty Hunters
a 5HD Kodiak Bear
and a 5HD Vicious Giant Rabbit that might as well be a Kodiak Bear
such fun and so much beer and pretzels
we spend more time talking our way out of problems and helping villages than we do murdering.
doesn't even feel like we are murderhobos at all.

Sounds like all you needed was a GM that suited your play style better than the SW one you talk about.

Sounds like all you needed was a GM that suited your play style better than the SW one you talk about. thank you. i really enjoy playing with Nova and i Really Enjoy playing with Grixit. those two are my favorite groups so far. much better than my Experiences with Weekly William, plus, Grixit brings back memories of my primary school drama club that was technically an RPG club masquerading as a Drama Club. fond little memories. i mean, i'm not normally a fan of Random Attributes or randomly determining anything that affects a characters power level. But Grixit makes it feel so rewarding. i mean, i might have nothing that provides a legitimate bonus. but at least i'm not completely helpless. i got leather armor, a dagger, a shortbow, and some arrows, and had to skimp out on well, the cheaper items. meaning, i had to go for secondhand quality rope, torches, backpack, cheap rations, and cheap wineskin.

Did a Few One Shots as a 20something year old male human Paladin of Selene.
Being a Paladin of Selene Really Saves lives when you are in a Ravenloft Setting. you get some of the Following Amazing Perks as a Paladin of Selene
you can Attempt to Pacify Werewolves and Vampires with your Voice, because both are Blessed by Selene in Different ways and you are a Divine Champion of the Moon.
you Can Throw Crystal Roses with Perfect Accuracy as if they were Darts. these Roses Deal Damage as Silvered Holy Darts
you get a Legitimate Excuse to Announce "In the name of the Moon! I am Here to Punish You!"

It seems to be working for you. i'm having a blast playing Julian in a few one shots. he Pacified 10 werewolves in 2 encounters, Pacified a young Vampiress. beat up a pair of extremely high level mimics. that each had 9d8+18 hit points. and i mean, i am having such a blast, with all the sailor moon jokes. if you Want Julian's description. a Silver haired Athletic figured male in his twenties, with blue eyes and fair northern skin, clad in silver plated steel plate armor, bearing a shield and tabard bearing the colors and crest of the Goddess Selene, at his hip rests a silver plated steel scimitar with a halfmoon guard and tassels of white flowing like ribbons of moonlight from the pommel. he carries a bag of what appears to be roses. i would spend low level spell slots tossing roses for 1d6+1 holy silver piercing damage apiece as i closed the distance, and swapped to my scimitar. which was silver plated, and was thus useful against the creatures of ravenloft.

we spend more time on one shots than we do on the actual campaign. and the one shots are a blast. and though Grixit is the primary game master, we have other players whom demonstrate taking turns in running one shots. and characters can be carried over across multiple one shots.

i just finished Running a Whitebox One Shot involving a Mysterious Manor in Snowy Mountains and a bunch of Faceless and Genderless Rubber Mannequin Servants whom wished not to frustrate a young fey mistress. to earn permission to leave the manor, they had to humour the mistress by bringing her an item from each room. which each room represented a different Facet of Lolita Fashion themed Doujin Tropes
the First of the 4 items was the teapot of the Party, inside the Tea Party room. Gothic Lolitas love Tea
the Second Item was a freely shared gold coin from the Treasury, representing speed of wits and the effort to live the gothloli lifestyle
the Third was the locket beneath the rape tree in the greenhouse behind the punishment room. representing memories of those close to ones self. much akin to nobility and family ties
the fourth room was a Schoolhouse, the item was the teacher's apple, representing the fruit of knowledge from eve, and the intense education required of nobility
after they presented the items peacefully. the mistress rewarded them a single choice of the four items
the Gold upon being pocketed, would boost dexterity by +1 before becoming pebbles
the apple upon being bit into, boosted intelligence by +1 before rotting
the tea, upon being drank, boosted charisma by +1
the locket, upun being worn enhanced retention and reflection, boosting wisdom by +1 before rusting
each of these boosts resembles a Wish Spell with a predetermined bonus
you could say each item represented a different facet of nobility. i mean, there were more rooms. but it was a one shot because the GM couldn't get players.

So... The players were these faceless, genderless rubber mannequin servants?

So... The players were these faceless, genderless rubber mannequin servants? no, that was the NPCs in the manor. the players hadn't yet become those those things. they where whatever characters they brought. random people brought after a night of partying with fey and drinking too much Liquor. not a single roll was needed. not a single fight. i just described things based on what actions they took. they would have become them if they failed to humour the mistress.

not a single roll was needed. not a single fight. i just described things based on what actions they took. I'm assuming the players had fun, and it sounds like you did as well, which is great. It also sounds like you didn't use the system mechanics though, but completely free-formed the whole thing instead. Which is totally cool. But as a "systems matter" kind of player, why even use Whitebox D&D then? Why not do the one-shot in a different system entirely?

But as a "systems matter" kind of player, why even use Whitebox D&D then? Why not do the one-shot in a different system entirely? because the group had Whitebox character backups already made. and i figured i wasn't really using many mechanics anyway. so i freeformed it, and would have had to improvise if combat started, but the mannequins only had 1HP and AC 9 Each. the real threats were the guards at the Armory, the Tree in the greenhouse, and the mistress. but they described taking explicit care to avoid conflict, so i rewarded them with a success for being detailed with thier precautions. the knights had 10HP and AC 6. not that i was going to tell them. the reason i didn't give the knights AC 2 is because they are clumsy and empty suits of armor. the mistress had 15HP and AC 5 with Regen 1/round. and at will 1st level arcane spells from a limited list, think she had magic missile, charm person, minor illusion, create food, create water, and a limited once per day ability to imbue an appropriate item with a predetermined wish effect that boosts a specific symbolic attribute related to the item.

little miss nightshroud is finally level 2 in a party with a level 2 human magic user, a level 6 elven assassin and a level 5 halfling fighter. and now she has an extremely nice suit Elven Chain and is still extremely poor. i rolled a 4 on the d4 for little miss nightshroud's hit points and the number quintupled from 1 to like 5. now i don't have to worry about dying to stepping on a single caltrop. the GM has a rule that lets thieves sacrifice a turn to get into backstab position, even if a foe is aware, as long as another player distracts them.
the wizard is pretty new, but he joined a matter of weeks before i did, and sessions were dry on experience due to a lack of treasure and the fact that monster kills provide very little experience and we spent more time exploring impoverished ruins than we did finding anything useful.
the Ruins of everspire had a mad elven blacksmith that used magic to craft armor on the cheap, but at least he was stocked on elven chain.
the wizard had her clothes destroyed thrice due to fumbles
and we bypassed a gelatonous cube.
i realized how bad a 10% chance to disable traps was. especially when you have a 90% chance of dying to a failure. but yeah, my stats suck.
