OK, so they found out that a Scorpion Body had been dropped off in the Lion sector of the city, which made it their problem, even though the deputy for the Scorpion Magistrate kept insisting she would take care of it.
Reviewing the evidence, investigation, and communing with kami led the team of magistrates to two places. One was where most Lion Samurai live in the city. The place of the murder was a geisha house in the Scorpion sector of the city. This house is popular with non scorpions who want to not worry abut being seen in their own sector of the city letting their face down.
Well, Scorpions were hiding in the walls (since they are basically paper) and taking any notes of information that may be used to help the Scorpion clan.
Now where I screwed up is to hammer this home I let them find the scorpion notes of the information they were learning. The adventurers were really looking for stuff and I went a little berserk with the "yes, and...: and I should never have given something like that out in retrospect. The scorpions would cover their tracks better than that.
So they found out from there who the Lion was who killed the Scorpion, and it looks like he purposefully deposited the body so that it would bring attention to the Geisha house and not be covered up by the scorpions. When we left off the adventurers were going to talk to the Lion Samurai in question.
I am thinking of having him killed by Scorpions in retaliation and the adventurers interrupting the murder, but I am not sure. My prep work has been compromised by the fact that I had a LARP this past weekend and admittedly that took some prep time itself.
Any suggestions on the books of information or the attempted murder idea? I want to get them into a combat because we have not done that with a majority of players and it would help in learning the rules.

First off, giving them the notes is no big deal. I mean they should have already realized, being in a Scorpion area, that they were being watched. And besides, leaving the notes around for them to find sounds to me like a Scorpion warning. "Hey, we're watching you, don't screw this up." Maybe use the notes to your advantage and put in there info that Scorpion X is looking for retaliation and plans to attack Lion Y at such and such time. Or, if it were me, I'd have the Scorpion out slandering the shit out of the Lion, basically goading the Lion into either attacking him, or requesting a duel. If he's successful, the Scorpion(as the challenged) gets to choose the duel type and his champion. Have him choose skirmish and choose the party as his champions since they are "the honorable law of the land".
