Someone at the Festival International Des Jeux in Cannes recently spotted and posted an image of a new promotional poster for FFG's L5R CCG here: imgur.com/2ZpljF9. The poster presents new stylised Mon for the original seven Great Clans, suggesting that the new LCG will start with seven factions. The date of August 2017 isn't a surprise, as FFG have announced that their L5R LCG would launch at Gencon this year, but as far as I know, this is the first promotion I've seen at a Gaming Convention. Just thought I'd share it with you fine jackers.

Even at GAMA last weekend all they'd say is that all the clans on the poster will be represented and that if you buy 2 boxes you'll have a full playset. When asked if they intend to publish the rpg all they said is "We didn't just buy the ccg license". I'm pretty annoyed by them at the moment.

This is why I never tried to get stuff when I was at GenCon. Unless you go very early on Thursday and stand in line you're kinda fucked. Especially with the VIG program.

I'm not sure about how quick they'll sell out. Yes, it's a popular brand with a huge following, but, at least as far as the CCG goes, they're starting from scratch. It'll sell, but this go-around it's being put out by a successful gaming company, not an upstart band of scrappy gamers. The likelihood of FFG not being prepared with enough stock I'd put at pretty low. And as far as why I'd guess that: years of Gencon experience from back in the Old Days even, having done booth work for it back when it was FRPG/AEG a few times, and also the fact we're looking at zero backward-compatibility. The backlash was horrific when the Olympic committee made them legally change the card backs, and that didn't change the game mechanics. TLDR: It'll be hot, but I doubt we're looking at an utter sellout where you need to be at Gencon Thursday and beeline right to the booth.

So... is Paizo, Steve Jackson Games, and Mayfair Games "an upstart band of scrappy gamers"? Because in the last few years they have all sold out of their products within the first day or so. Which is why Paizo instituted the policy of breaking up their stock into 4 chunks. So that they have some stock on each of the days of the con.

It gets worse for this game because to have a "complete" set, you need to buy three sets.

It gets worse for this game because to have a "complete" set, you need to buy three sets. That's not strictly true. The core set will contain every current card in the game. However, the rules allow you to use multiple cards of certain types, so what FFG have been saying is that in order to be 'competitive', you would need to buy three core sets, as this will give every combination and every option for deck-building. I'll need to get the game on the table in order to see if that's true. I think you'll be able to compete with just one set if you build your deck well. I'll definitely buy one set, and may pick up one or two others if they eventually go on sale.

First glance numbers had Paizo pulling in $11.2M in revenue as of 2012. SJG pulls in $6.6M. If anything, I'd say the issue is more of a case of misreading the amount of stock to bring with, as opposed to 'Oh gawd, we didn't print enough.'
