One of the things I always try and do with any system is to try and be able to gauge generic stat levels with NPCs. I'm not quite at the point with L5R where I can do that on the fly so have produced the following and would appreciate some feedback to see if it seems reasonable: Google Doc

I use their stats modified slightly so they are a little better or worse depending on who they are.

I especially like that at Rank 5 you have the average skill at a 6. Something I've always found it hard to get into player's heads is that in L5R you aren't really a specialist. You need to diversify, ESPECIALLY at higher rank. As you increase in rank you get more responsibility, which means you need to be more politic. Etiquette, courtier, etc become more important as you rank up and should not be forgotten because you want Kenjutsu at 10 for ALL THE DICEZ EVER!

uncommonman - part of what I'm aiming for here is to actually avoid doing that. I want the players to deal with people who are at completely different levels to them both socially and mechanically, that way they have to learn to judge their opponent's and adjust their approach to dealing with then. SirGuido - yeah that's something I'm trying to reinforce as well, especially as going specialist will slow down your insight rank progression.

@whodo , I think figuring out stat benchmarks is a really efficient way to prep for games. It's what I do, and it's saved me a TON of time (compared to when I used to try to prep more NPCs). Unfortunately, the L5R books don't give great guidelines (ESPECIALLY CORE!). It looks like you've got a pretty good approach here. Maybe I'm wrong, but it looks like your table answers this question: "If I want an NPC of insight rank X, what do their stats look like?" You've created a really great reference, which I'm definitely going to borrow if you don't mind... I've grappled with the generic stats problem myself, and I've taken a slightly different approach, using a different question. I ask "Based on this character's role, how proficient should they be at (activity)?" Drawing inspiration from mook 's How to Be a GURPS GM, I tried to make benchmarks based on secondary job skills, primary job skills, expert level skills, etc. Amateur is skill rank 1, secondary or background is rank 2, professional is rank 3, expert/beginning teacher is rank 5. Similarly, if a trait is central to a character's job, I set it at 3. If it's ancillary, it's 2. If the character is great, it's 4. And unless a character is a specialist, skill rank does not exceed trait rank. I figure if I have to make a more competent character than that, I should probably have that NPC prepped ahead of time. But now I don't have to, because I have your handy guide. Mwahahaha.

Yeah in other systems I tend to use a proficiency based approach but I often find that begins to break down as I expand the character out from more than a couple of skills. I focused on insight rank here as it gave me a good way to break NPCs into clear proficiency levels.
If I were to go further with the table I'd also add in roughly how many skills they should have under each category but at the moment I don't require that level of detail. I'd also add a shugenja specific table with higher rings and lower skills.
Oh and I definitely don't mind anybody else here stealing or modifying this, makes writing it up worth it.
