I've been reading Fate Core and I'm sort of getting my head around it. I'm thinking of trying it out on a Harry Potter game. But now I'm wondering if Dresden has more to offer in the line of magic. What say you?

What say you? I like fate accelerated or Dresden Accelerated for Harry Potter. Since everyone plays a wizard, accelerated gets rid of the whole issue of magic as a skill or skills. Approaches from accelerated are great for games where characters will be somewhat similar because it separates them almost by personality type. In my mind, skill systems are good for defining what you can do. If you can all do the same stuff, you might as well focus on how you do it instead, which is approaches.

Ah okay. I have a copy of FAE I'll dig out and start reading. Thank you.

I cobbled together a baseline Fudge hack for Harry Potter a while ago. It was a fun exercise.

I'm not really familiar with any of the Dresden stuff, neither the novels nor the various Fate games. Bit I would probably use Fate Accelerated Edition for a Harry Potter game. From what I remember of Harry Potter, magic can do just about anything and there aren't a whole lot of rules constraining things. Allowing characters to cast spells in a certain way using Fate Accelerated (Carefully, Cleverly, Flashily, Forcefully, Quickly, or Sneakily) seems like a better fit than tying it to a casting skill like in Fate Core. You could have characters specialize in certain schools of magic through Stunts and Aspects.

One thing that comes to mind: if using FAE, you could potentially highlight favorite spells through aspects. Like for connection aspects, each character could also choose a spell that helped them in that event, which they came to rely on. That way, players can have a little mechanical differentiation based on the lore they already know, and the compels could be interesting--like choosing a spell that's dramatically unfit for the problem at hand, or an opponent being familiar with a student's strategy.

Okay, so under your recommendations I been looking at my copy of FAE. I think your right about approaches. I was trying to wrap my head around how I would get the skills worked out. But approaches are perfect! zoomfarg I like your idea for favourite spell aspect. It would personalize the character more and let me know what kind of spells they like.
Any advice on prepping a FAE game?

I think it'd be cool if (maybe not the PC's, but maybe, your call) the students all got a stunt for their house. Perhaps something like:
Slytherin: Once per session when I sneakily attack I get a +2 Hufflepuff: Once per session when I carefully overcome an obstacle I get +2 Ravenclaw: Once per session when I cleverly overcome an obstacle I get +2 Gryffindor: Once per session when I forcefully attack I get a +2
edit to add: it's been awhile since I looked at FAE stunts. once per session may not be enough, but once per scene seems like too much... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Stunts are for differentiating what you are all about, not so much the broad strokes.

I was thinking something similar. But I'm hoping to run a ministry game. So maybe it would be their positions in the ministry. Might be on to something here.

I recently ran a harry Potter game using FAE, and it worked very well. Approaches solved the problem of HP magic being broken and a tad inconstant from a game balance perspective. Here are some of the stunts I used:
Magical Beast Expert. Because I'm a Magical creature expert, I get +2 when I Carefully attack a magical beast to make it back down.
Blending in. Because I'm an Undercover Auror, I get +2 when I Sneakily creat an advange by convincing a group that I am one of their members.
Connect the Dots. Because I have an Eye for details, once per session, I can lay out the clues the team has discovered so far and ask the GM to provide an additional clue.
Hone Badger Form. Because I'm a Honey Badger Animagus, once per session I can automaticly escape a conflict by assuming my honey badger form and running away.
Eye of rabbit, harp string hum, turn this water into rum. Because I am a Master of Transfiguration, I get +2 when I cleverly create advantages by transforming objects in the environment.
Shape Changer. Because I'm a Metamorphomagus I get +2 when I sneakily overcome an obsticle by altering my appearance.
Slytheren Fraternity. Because I'm a scion of House Slytheren, once per session I can automaticly gain the trust of another Slytheren until I act to betray that trust.

Thank you for the examples! They will be really helpful when I do character creation. I am getting back into the grove again, prep wise. I was going to prep a Star Wars game till I talked to a friend in the group we play in and he is prepping one. So I might be putting this as my main focus.
