On a more constructed note, I was stuck in Palladium limbo for many a year in my youth, as it was the only system the only GM (who also refused to play) would run. I've revisited it more recently, and my impression that the active defense makes combat take longer than any other system has stayed put.
Yeah active defense can really slow things down, unless your players are proactive about it. Mine are really good about rolling parry when they get attacked. Though only men at arms really get much active defense, the casters and psychics lose actions if they use it so the decision is what takes more time than the comparative roll.

Gillsing: Interesting fact about a movie that put me to sleep the first two times I tried to watch it at RPG cons. The third time I managed to stay awake, and was disappointed. Everyone seemed to like it so much. But apparently it was not for me. Story of my life.
