Prequel? How the hell did I miss that? It's a fanfic short story Andy Weir (of The Martian fame) wrote, and Cline liked so much he decided it was canon. Yeah I found that last night after this comment. I internally gasped at the reveal.

I just finished re-listening to RP1. There's hints all throughout, that Weir was able to tie together into some cohesiveness.

It's a shit ton of fun and all the nerd hate I'm seeing everywhere about it is pissing me off. ?Where is the nerd hate? Just curious because I have seen no opinion one way or another until right now. As a guy who grew up on the nerdiness enshrined as geek-gospel in Cline's book, it felt pawing, cloying, and masturbatory to me. It was Cline going back to what he knows and is comfortable with and finding a way to define a future world around it. I was really unhappy with its "LOOK HOW COOL THE STUFF YOU LIKE IS" attitude. For what it's worth, I'm not a hipster. I turn 50 next month.

It's here, if anyone wants to read it: www.galactanet.com/oneoff/lacero.htmlThe edition where it was included has sold out, according to either io9 or the wikipediatubes.

TV-series: LEXX
It's... something, alright. Plus, first season's got Rutger Hauer AND Malcolm McDowell!

Paranormal/cryptid/mystery videos on YouTube. Not creepypasta, although those are nifty, too, but videos about ghost/monster/alien sightings and such.
Not because I believe in that stuff, per se, it just interests me. I know it's all bunk and clickbait... it's just something I enjoy for some reason.
And more than once I've gotten game ideas from some of them...

Métal Hurlant/Heavy Metal is quite an adept comparison, especially in the attitude to sex. The CG is atrocious, and so is the practical effects. On the other hand, the last episode of season one feature Malcolm McDowell's face protruding from a sphincter-esque aperture within the brain of the Giga-Shadow, so... My feelings towards it is best summarized as: "This is so baaad! But I am happy it exists."

LEXX fucking rocks. Who doesn't love a show about multiple love triangles between: a cryogenically frozen undead assassin, a half cluster-lizard love slave (without the brainwashing), a disembodied robot head that got the love slave's programming, and the universe's biggest loser who just happens to control the ultimate superweapon? It's cheesy as shit, and I absolutely love it. I've got half-finished LEXX characters written up in like half a dozen systems.

The second season's weird-place-of-the-week setup feels pretty apt at poking loving fun at roleplaying tropes and themes, not the mention their recurring boredom and horniness as a catalyst for plot. It's a bit like Samurai Champloo, but they're motivated by their libido instead of an empty stomach. LEXX is my goto setting and characters for trying out to hack and tweak the dials of the Apocalypse Engine.

LEXX is my goto setting and characters for trying out to hack and tweak the dials of the Apocalypse Engine. Believe it or not, but I have actually not written up LEXX characters for a PbtA game. Mostly because I haven't found an "off the shelf" PbtA game that I felt worked. I've made some of characters for both Cortex Plus and Fate though, but those are universal systems that can do lots of different settings/genres with very little (sometimes no) rules tweaking. I feel that I would have to do some serious modifications to make an existing PbtA game work for LEXX. That being said, the first thing I thought when I picked up Uncharted Worlds was,"Hey. If I bolted Sex Monves onto this game, it could probably do LEXX pretty well."

I thought of another musical guilty pleasure. The Carpenters. Sure, I get that they're thought of as corny, sappy 70s music, but Karen's voice is so clear and pleasant. Her death was a terrible tragedy.
