So I started a thread over in the Fate section about finding something with some more mechanical meat to it and wound up, once again, eyeing off the GURPS books on my shelf and wondering how to make the damn thing less utterly lethal. Thread is here: happyjacks.proboards.com/thread/6458/crunchy-alternatives-fate-loverThought bubbles in a nutshell: Use WEG d6 and port the GURPS advantages over Use Hero (discarded, GURPS is better aside from the DAMN LETHALITY PROBLEM) Genesys (not out yet) Strands of Fate 2e (I got the playtest, yay! And maybe?) Use Impulse Buys (possible, though I really don't like turning permanent advancement into once-off survival) GURPS Supers 3e Stun damage system (anybody have/seen this in action?) Pyramid Magazine: Alternate GURPS II (has rules for cranking down the weapon damage a lot) The "TV Action Violence" rule (which as I understand it, basically turns your FP into a stack of 'near miss' points?) For context, I started all this looking for a system that I could run Starfinder in without, y'know, actually touching a d20. Any further advice would be greatly appreciated you mad bastards (and bastardettes)!

That depends on how un-deadly you want the game. Do you want your PCs to survive a sniper rifle to the face? Or just be able to shrug off more bullets than 1? For the latter, just give your PCs high DR armor, high levels (10 or more) of Hard to Kill (B58), and medium levels (4 or 5) of Hard to Subdue (B59). For the former, Unkillable 1 (B95) plus the hard to kill, hard to subdue, and possibly High DR face armor (super-glass?).
If you really want to throw game balance out the window, and want to make GURPS severely non-lethal, change how HP is calculated. For instance STxHT. This means that an average human has 100HP. Now, on average, a sniper rifle to the face will still reduce you to negative hp; but you don't die right away from that. They may die because their head is crippled, but if you are throwing snipers at them, then the snipers should be scary, not merely an annoyance.
Another alternative is to use the optional cinematic rule "Flesh Wounds" on B417, and give them some CP that they have to save to use for this rule.
Hope this helps!

Thanks for this! So far the options I plan on turning on are TV Action Violence and a few modifications from Alternate GURPS in the Pyramid magazines... I'll post which ones when I get home from work. ;-) Edit: Okay, home! So "Survivable Guns" from Alternate GURPS II definitely caught my eye. I was wondering if there might be a better way to do TV Action Violence, like reducing the damage from xd6 to xd2 - still random, low enough to (hopefully) avoid instadeath, but still of consequence? Also, the "Playing with Health" rules in Alternate GURPS IV are really cool.
