Next weekend I will be going to Kublacon in San Francisco. I play warmachine and Hordes so I will be participating in some of those events but I was wondering what else to do.
Should I sign up for a bunch of RPGs and games or should I just wander around and look for openings to drop in to?
Any other con advice would be welcome as well.

Sign up for things you absolutely want to see, but don't overschedule yourself.
Wear comfortable shoes and plan to walk more than you expect.
Drink lots. Getting dehydrated will mess you up faster than you think.
Don't spend all your money on your first trip through the dealer area.

Drink lots.... of beer?
Will there be events you can just show up and do or do you have to register for everything? Anyone here go to Kublacon last year? I have no idea what to expect.

Take some filling and nutritious snacks that you can surreptitiously eat during games if need be. I've found that dried apricots and cheese-and-cracker sandwiches work well.

The old "1,2,3" rule is important to remember. Everyday get atleast 1 shower, 2 meals and 3 hours of sleep. And Greatwyrm is right about not over scheduling; but accept that if you don't sign up for something, you probably won't get in to do it. We had some guys that only scheduled one event at Fear the Con, and they only wound up participating in one event.

That's been my experience as well - more than once I've wandered around conventions without playing anything for a big chunk of a day, simply because I'd neglected to actually sign up for any games.

I would heartily recommend signing up for games that you just want to check out or maybe a setting within a system you want to do. Cons are a great way to try before you buy.

The old "1,2,3" rule is important to remember. Everyday get atleast 1 shower, 2 meals and 3 hours of sleep. This is the first I'm hearing of the "1, 2, 3 Rule". It sounds like a decent one for gamers to follow all the time and not only when they attend cons. ;D

As far as prereg for games it's sort of a hit and miss thing at most cons. The bigger the con the more likely it is that games will fill up in a hurry. By bigger I don't mean, "More people," rather I mean more well known.
I cannot agree with Rob enough, there is not a better time to try out new game systems and things you've never done before.
I would also add something to the 1.2.3 rule, and that would be 4 (drink at least 4 bottles of water) It might not seem like it, but you can quickly become dehydrated even just roaming around a hotel.
Enjoy the con, looking forward to hearing about it.

The warmachine events look like they run for ten hours, holy shit! That does not leave much time for other stuff.
I am a little weary to throw myself into something I don't have any experience with. Any suggestions on easy things to pick up.
Also will these games in the conventions have a sign up cost?

Depends entirely upon the convention.
At Gen Con you have to buy event tickets, which can either be event-specific or generic tickets. Having an event-specific ticket in hand means you're guaranteed a seat at the table for that particular game, but you can use a generic ticket if there's an empty chair needing to be filled.
At the smaller local conventions, there wasn't any cost at all associated with the individual games. Once you paid for your badge, you could play as many games as you could cram into a single weekend.

Crazy weekend. My girlfriend and I shared a hotel room with my friend and his wife who were so disgustingly gassy we all got up at 7 am and cleared out of the room. I had a crazy week before this and so I had nothing really planned out and I didn't even have my Warmachine lists ready. Luckily all the right models were in the bag and the 10 hour main turnamento only took around 8. Great turn out and great players. Severe lack of scantily clad cos play models unfortunately. On the last game the people at the tournament start to hand out beers to everyone. There is a bar above the convention and you can walk around with beer, and people at the event had rolling coolers filled with beer. Last round starts and I have just drank my forth beer in under 15 minutes, my timed turn begins and my bladder alerts me that this beer chugging was a bad choice. I had to run to the bathroom twice during that game. I used my turn extension on one and just let my clock run on the other. Still pulled out the victory. They had a auction there and flea market with crazy deals. Next time I do something like this I'll have to bring more dough. 50-60 dollar euro games were going for about 10 dollars new. I didn't get to stick around for the rpg auction to see the deals. Also next time I am going to leave the women at home. We do not have gamer ladies and they want to do other things besides gaming, atrocious! I got to see a lot of different things but I didn't get to play new stuff. Next year; beer cooler, and stay in the hotel running the event. Also plan out gaming time in advance and don't bring non gamers who want a piece of my time.

Glad to hear it was a good weekend (aside from the chemical warfare)! And apparently I'm missing out - in all my years, I haven't been to a convention yet where it was cool to drink alcohol while gaming.
