Hi all,
Going over my character for an upcoming low fantasy game; and I have a question about armor. Specifically, hand armor. How would I go about designing gauntlets that only protect the back of the hand? I need cost/weight modifier, and how to deal with damage to the hands. Would you just use 1/2DR? Or would you say there is a 50/50 chance of hitting a finger and roll 1d and on an odd it hits the armor and on an even it hits a finger?
Also, on the topic of cost/weight, why is the cost/weight 10% of torso armor, but both knees and elbows are 5%, despite being similar sizes? Should hands be 5% cost/weight? or 10% cost and 5% weight? Perhaps 5% for both but require the Expert Tailoring?
Thoughts?

Hiya, G.I. Joe,
With the caveat that this is way beyond any granularity I would use (but hey, that's why I love GURPS! Because you can if you want to), I'd say:
Cost/Weight: Low-Tech p.100 says "For armor that covers only half of a location – e.g., “front only,” like a breastplate – halve the cost and weight of armor for that area," so that's what I'd use for a 'half gauntlet.'
Damage: The 50/50 split you propose seems gameable, and is mechanically similar to rolling 50/50 to determine whether left or right hand/foot is hit.
I don't have any insight into why they made the choices they did, but I'm sure changing the 10% mod to 5% isn't going to break anything. Have at it!
