Our usual Thursday GURPS game was cancelled due to a majority of players missing, so instead, our GM brought the film Uber Goober and we watched that. It's an independently made documentary about gaming in the Dallas area. It primarily focuses on war games, roleplaying games, and LARPing, but it was really interesting to see. Several of the people who were interviewed in the film opted to have their faces blurred, as they haven't "come out" to friends, family, and/or coworkers. One of these people happened to be a member of the DPD, and confided that he had one other buddy on the force that he could share his gaming stories with.
The film seemed to be primarily focused on how the public views these hobbies. It was split into several sections, and each was preceded by asking people on the street what they thought about people who played Dungeons and Dragons. I was a little taken aback by some of the responses, to be honest. I mean, I know that the hobby isn't generally favorably looked upon, but some of these people were vile. Many of them were also probably drunk, but that's beside the point.
Do you all feel the need to hide the hobby from people? I don't go around telling people that I game, and it's not something that I'll typically bring up to people that I've met recently, but if I'm gaming on Friday, and someone asks me what I'm planning on doing, chances are good that I'll be frank with them.
Also, if you can find it, check Uber Goober out. Their website is here.
