So a friend of mine has been asking me to run a game for them. I asked them what kind, and they brought up Vampire, but they didn't know a lot about it. I, being the loyalist that I am, suggested they listen to the Mote of Sin AP to get an idea.
One week later they come up to me and say "You know what, nevermind. It feels like you're supposed to be a total asshole all the time. Everyone is such a dick it would take the fun out of the game for me."
After trying to remedy the situation or suggest another game, my friend just called the whole thing off.
How can I salvage this? He thinks ALL RPGs are like that, and apparently he listened to the last 10 episodes of MoS. Help. Idk what to do.

Those games show a very different experiance than the one he witnessed with Mote of Sin. Explain to him that games are like TV shows or books, not every game is for everyone. You’ll like some and dislike some.

Or introduce him to JiB's #JustUs4 Masks game. That one's upbeat, and exceptionally well done.

Have them listen to Campaign or The Dungeon Dome by the One Shot Network or even The Adventure Zone by the McElroys. Drastically different tones, drastically different styles of APs than the HJRPG umbrella.

Also, let him know that his understanding of Vampire is correct. It's not a game where people play nice people. If he wants fun or excitement, there are other systems and genres that'll be a better match for him.

I really hate, personally, games where people play Malkavians or (especially) the Sabbat for jokes and laughs. Malkavians can be fun awesome characters if done right, but the Sabbat are supposed to be absolutely terrifyingly inhuman. They specifically revel in Not Pretending to Be Human. In groups I've played with, sadly, it's just the bad Chaotic Neutral stereotypes in a new system :/

Mote is a pretty contentious game. Maybe not as much as some other V:tM games.
You might suggest to him that the contentiousness of the game has a lot to do with Clan choices. Two Gangrel and a Setite don’t make for a happy family.
I would contend that if you set it up correctly, V:tM could be quite cooperative. A Sabbat game where everyone’s blood bonded comes to mind (whatever that ritual is called).
If you think he might be salvaged (but honestly, it doesn’t), suggest the Inukai game. That game is all inner conflict and (if memory serves) zero party conflict.
The Mote game — especially the last half — is probably the most contentious game I’ve ever run. Well, there was that one GURPS Fantasy game where the party colluded to kill another player’s character...

After listening to a couple episodes the player is willing to give it another chance. L5R in my future! Many thanks to all involved in the thread.

There are way better systems and genres for players who want to be people who are nice and get along with everyone else in the party. "Classic" D&D springs to mind here.

Full disclosure: I haven't listened to Mote since I left. Can't bring myself to do it, it makes me sad. Anyway. If you're playing V:tM and you're being openly contentious, I think you're doing it wrong... specific character concepts aside (like "I'm an argumentative fuck" for instance). I think you should be openly nice and friendly and supportive, while being completely backstabby and manipulative and self-centered and horrible behind the scenes where no one can see you do it.

This had honestly crossed my mind. Your presence on the mote was so central to the dynamic. I still love the Mote more than any other AP, but missing Thkully and Adrianne has changed the tone. It's still as-good, but it's sure different now.

Skully's on tour, man. Killer show in San Diego last night. 2 audience members were found in an alley severely anemic.

I'm sorry that PbP game of Monsterhearts you were in fell apart Probie Tim. With that attitude, you would have been perfect.
