Yup. Traffic in LA sucks ass.
Not only that, but for those of use who think we can out-smart the traffic by taking surface roads, the traffic there sucks too.
When I was a teenager, I traveled back to Missouri and Illinois to visit relatives (that’s where my family came from). I was riding with one of my many uncles across the river to Illinois, and there was an announcement on the radio that there was heavy traffic on the bridge. I think we slowed from 45mph to maybe 35mph. I kept asking where the traffic was. They told me “this is it.” I responded, this isn’t traffic. They looked at me like I was crazy.
Years later, when they visited us in California, we went to Disneyland, and they complained about the traffic. I said, “this isn’t traffic. Traffic is when you wonder whether you should turn off your car to save gas.”

Probably. I used to drive a Honda Civic Hybrid. It would shut down on the freeway all the time (when I’m stopped, thankfully).

Remind me never to come to LA... Freeways (which seem like they should have been named parkways sometimes) aren’t so bad compared to tiny one way roads near the ocean next to cities where the only parking is metered (screw you laguna beach!). Also, San Fransisco is the true hell hole of driving. As a person who equates owning a car to freedom, San Fransisco scares the shit out of me.

So should I avoid California or the entire west coast in general? I will admit I am definitely a North East guy and don’t mind driving in Manhattan but the 405 looks horrible and JFC San Francisco scares the hell out of Steven. Though the beltway around DC has those moments of should I turn the car off? And Boston - Boston is a pretty unique driving experience.

The suburbs are sprawling and the traffic is not merely so hellish. If you fly into So Cal, try to fly into John Wayne or Long Beach instead of LAX. The newer areas are typically better about having big enough roads with high enough speed limits (Oh Irvine, if only you weren’t so expensive).

I grew up in CA and have been in CA traffic all my life. But the most scared I've ever been was when I went back to the Maryland renfair and the trip from the airport to my hotel took me through the DC beltway.

Well, for those folks that will end up visiting us on a Strategicon convention weekend, just know that you fly into LAX and the hotel is right there, without a freeway that needs to be driven. That's a plus.
