Remind me never to come to LA... Freeways (which seem like they should have been named parkways sometimes) aren’t so bad compared to tiny one way roads near the ocean next to cities where the only parking is metered (screw you laguna beach!). Also, San Fransisco is the true hell hole of driving. As a person who equates owning a car to freedom, San Fransisco scares the shit out of me. San Francisco was, for me, far less repugnant than Los Angeles… …except for the time I had to drive a stick-shift through those inclines.

So should I avoid California or the entire west coast in general? I will admit I am definitely a North East guy and don’t mind driving in Manhattan but the 405 looks horrible and JFC San Francisco scares the hell out of Steven. Though the beltway around DC has those moments of should I turn the car off? And Boston - Boston is a pretty unique driving experience. California is okay if you stay out of the major cities. The suburbs are sprawling and the traffic is not merely so hellish. If you fly into So Cal, try to fly into John Wayne or Long Beach instead of LAX. The newer areas are typically better about having big enough roads with high enough speed limits (Oh Irvine, if only you weren’t so expensive). Burbank Airport (colloquially called Bob Hope Airport) is a good alternate for LAX as well. When I went to Gencon, I flew out of Bob Hope. The airport doesn't even open until 7 or 8 am. Small airport, small terminal. Quite nice.

I drive the 405 everyday. It takes me about 1.5 hours to drive 25miles. If not for podcasts and audio books I would have blown my brains out.
I have driven in NY city many time. Driving there is like a game, you try to find alternate ways, you have to dodge taxis and pedestrians. You get to honk your horn and flip off people. Its fun but stressful. Driving in LA traffic is... sit in traffic to get on on ramp, get on freeway and don't touch gas peddle for 1 hour. Get off freeway and go home. It's soul sucking.

And, sadly, everyone on the 405 is thinking or feeling the same stuff as you are. I worked in Redwood City and commuted from south San Jose, California, for a little over half a year. It was only 38 miles, and the fastest I ever managed it was 45 minutes, with an average time of 70 minutes — you have it worse than I did. One time, due to traffic, it took 150 minutes — I thought, "I have to move. Either move to Redwood City or move back to Japan, but I'm not gonna do this again." You have my sympathy; you're facing worse on a daily basis.
