Here is an interesting article. I say it is interesting because we at Happy Jacks have touched on all of these points at one time or another, sometimes more than once. i'd like to state, that good role playing is all about improv, and i think i've improved on the improvisational end mainly from playing in RPG's (and as a theatre major i can tell you that has helped big time). good gm's are also great at improve, i personally feel that Azuretalon is a great gm because he can go with just about anything on the fly and keep the game goin

A couple of years back, when I was just starting to get back into gaming, the first book I picked up was Sly Flourish's DMimg Tips. Great stuff, and it gave me the confidence to run a game again.
I need to give it a reread. I'm sure it's in my Kindle archive somewhere.

When I get nervous flutters, whether as a player or a GM, I do my best to redirect that energy into the game. It's reached the point where I will sometimes know that something big is going to happen because my heart starts beating faster. It doesn't always end for the best, but I'd like to think that it makes for a more interesting game than if I had just sat on my hands.
