I have to agree with @stevensw that it seems more like an attack on creators, the timing seems suspect given the recent rise in certain interest groups flagging Patreon as part of an aggressive 'no platform' strategy - interest groups that confuse 'free speech' with 'free speech but only if agrees with my speech'. I also get an EA Style Battlefront 2 Loot Boxes money grab vibe from the recent Patreon Change. I wouldn't even be surprised if Patreon's next message starts 'It was not our intention ...'. Aaron Eh.. I haven’t seen much of the deplatforming stuff. Most of what I have seen is about advertisers not wanting to run their ads in front of anything that isn’t ‘family friendly’. Those sorts of people (and others who are barely related to them) started losing money rapidly and opened patreons to stop the hemorrhaging of money. Their videos are as popular as ever, but they are making way less than they used to. Patreon probably saw a rise in small donations (people giving a dollar who used to watch for free with ads) and decided their bottom line wasn’t being as well served by their current pricing structure. My understanding is they used to take less of a flat fee and that flat fee was taken per batch and not per donation. Some number cruncher figured out they’d make a shit load of money if they changed that and they either determined they’d make more even after losses of supporters or they didn’t forsee the backlash. It usually occurs when someone either false flags a video or submits a failed DMRC - they then go the creators patreon and try to get their account pulled or frozen. whether I agree with a creators politics or not, trying to remove their ability to earn a living is (IMHO) the greater wrong. Agreed, though, that a good dose of greed is the main motivator Aaron

Well, I was only using Patreon to shuttle Stu a couple of bucks each month for the show. I stopped my pledge and deactivated my account, and made sure that I told them these changes were the reason why. If it becomes an issue, I'll just drop a fiver on Stu's desk when I come up for the show.

Here's a post from the VP of Growth at Patreon brianbalfour.com/essays/patreon-onboarding-growth"We'd rather have our GMV be made up of fewer, but truly life-changed creators rather than a lot of creators making a few dollars." The TL;DR is fuck small time creators, fuck one dollar donors, and fuck our users. Like I mentioned in the Discord, can I just have my bank send up autopayment and just cut Stu Venable a check every month that shows up in the mail? Because fuck Patreon at this point.

Yep. Looks like they got serious blow-back. Doesn't say they commit to not rolling out some similar type changes, but they claim they will do so more transparently. We'll see. Like he says in the post "I know it will take a long time for us to earn back your trust." Damn straight. But this is a good first step.

It's weird how, when a company tells me that I'm committing to pay a certain way and for a certain amount of time, and then they change the deal on their end without consulting me, it's very upsetting.
I develop in Unity, and I committed to paying their "Pro" price so I'd have complete platform parity with my partner in California. At the time, it was $75+VAT/mo and a year commitment.
At the 10 month mark, it went to $135 with zero announcement. I had a back-and-forth with their support about when I could downgrade to $35/mo for "Plus" - I had to pay two months of their increased price before I could change the terms on my side.
Then it turned out to require another one-year commitment, ignoring that I'd already spent a year on subscription at a higher rate and, again, no guarantee that they wouldn't hike "Plus" to a higher rate at some point.
So now I'm using their free version and they're getting no money from me.

Patreon: “It was not our intention ....” <pause> “We’re waiting for EA to take the lead on this one, then we’ll know what we’re going to do next” Aaron
