I figured out what I was paying Happy Jacks each month and set that as my pledge, with a limit of 1 a month.

The Evil Hat guys did a mailer-notice today, seems like Patreon has committed a pretty serious faux-pas:

Yesterday I supported a dozen creators on Patreon. If I was giving someone $1 a month, I evaluated if I wanted to give them more, and if not, I dropped them. I could not see paying an almost 40 cent fee to give someone $1. I was giving Happy Jacks $3 per creation so $12 a month. I Switched to $5 a creation, but put in $20 and set a limit of 1 per month. That way I give $5 per Friday show but only pay the transaction fee once a month. Due to this change in fee structure I now support 8 creators.

Anyone else see this as just another shot in the war on content creators online? YouTube screws everyone and they run to patreon to try and get out from under googles thumb, then patreon screws everyone. What will be next? You decide! Epic battles of creatorey! (Which is an ERB of History joke).

I was actually wondering how Patreon got past the credit card service charges. In the USA many shops won't allow CC transactions less than US$10 because of the fees. I wondered how Patreon was managing their money to be able to pay creators when most charges were coming in under $10.

Most places that aren’t tiny mom and pop outfits take credit cards for everything. No ten dollar or even five dollar minimum. At least that’s how it is where I live in California.

Thanks for clarifying. I grew up and lived in California until 2001, so it appears my information is now outdated.

I’m interested in Patreon but not a user. Every time I pledge (to Happy Jacks among others), my card gets frozen because my credit card provider thinks it’s a fraudulent transaction. Also it’s dollars only. So pledging to a UK creator means the banks get two bites at the forex apple. So I’m not a fan. But this change makes me less of a fan.
I don’t mind paying the fees, because it means creators get more. But paying the fees on each pledge rather than each transaction is just highway robbery. It’ll be interesting to see what Drip, from KickStarter does when they launch properly.

So they've put an updated post here: blog.patreon.com/updating-patreons-fee-structure/ trying to explain their justification. It sounds like their justification is trying to simplify fees so creators get a stable amount each month but they're doing a really bad job in justifying and explaining it, especially with their "creators get 95%" bull. No, that logic only holds if you ignore the processing fees entirely, as a supporter that's not something I can do. I suspect that at least part of this is being driven by the credit card / bank / paypal companies trying to force a fee per transaction. What I don't get is how they can justify each pledge as an individual transaction when it is only being processed once. That's nonsense. I'll probably be moving my HJ pledge to a single larger pledge each month to reduce the processing fees. Not bothered by the reward tier, the podcast, APs and community makes it worthwhile without any added bonuses.

Just submitted this complaint to Patreon about the new fees, if I get a response I'll post it up as well:

I have to agree with @stevensw that it seems more like an attack on creators, the timing seems suspect given the recent rise in certain interest groups flagging Patreon as part of an aggressive 'no platform' strategy - interest groups that confuse 'free speech' with 'free speech but only if agrees with my speech'. I also get an EA Style Battlefront 2 Loot Boxes money grab vibe from the recent Patreon Change. I wouldn't even be surprised if Patreon's next message starts 'It was not our intention ...'. Aaron

Aaron Eh.. I haven’t seen much of the deplatforming stuff. Most of what I have seen is about advertisers not wanting to run their ads in front of anything that isn’t ‘family friendly’. Those sorts of people (and others who are barely related to them) started losing money rapidly and opened patreons to stop the hemorrhaging of money. Their videos are as popular as ever, but they are making way less than they used to. Patreon probably saw a rise in small donations (people giving a dollar who used to watch for free with ads) and decided their bottom line wasn’t being as well served by their current pricing structure. My understanding is they used to take less of a flat fee and that flat fee was taken per batch and not per donation. Some number cruncher figured out they’d make a shit load of money if they changed that and they either determined they’d make more even after losses of supporters or they didn’t forsee the backlash.

I wondered how Patreon was managing their money to be able to pay creators when most charges were coming in under $10. Plus, the way they used to do it was charge once a month with all the pledges at the same time, so one transaction on your card, With this new fee structure they charge each transaction for each creator separately. So last month I had 28 events at Patreon, but got charged once. This month that would be 28 separate charges, each with it's own fee. I went through my pledges, so will have 8 charges this month, we'll have to see how much that pisses me off before I make any more changes.
