i plan on Running Rise of Tiamat in the future, but i doubt i will get the 5 players the Adventure is designed for, most of the group got annoyed by my giving them NPC henchmen and i don't know how to rebalance the encounters for 2 or 3ish people. i would suggest each of them running 2 characters apiece and later on being able to recruit a companion. but i don't know if that would be enough,
i gave the level 1 feat optional rule, savage worlds style bennies that can be used for rerolls on d20s, 32 point buy, some free healing potions and a DM chosen background boon (equal to a feat your DM assigns you) to hopefully balance things out. well, the DM background boon is usually a racial feat or something that gives extra proficiencies.

Give them minions.
Animal, monster or humanoid creatures that they control.
Or maby magic items that they can use to summon minions.

I definitely lean towards companions or pets that have simple abilities. I'm going to do that to buff up my party in my next L5R game - just a guy in armor with a weapon, a deputy.
In D&D it could be a dog you command as a free action, or a man-at-arms. I wouldn't use anything with special abilities, just something that can have a to-hit, AC and hit points.
