But this one shows a little more promise than anything else I've stumbled across. roll20.net/

Only if it can do non-d20 (which, judging by the name...) - in which case, I love it.

You can change the map to a hex grid.
The die roller is very flexible.
The only thing I haven't noticed yet is if there are facings for the makers on the map.

Yes you can rotate the tokens using the circle at the top. It also has a card deck. The one issue I haven't found how to get around yet is the measuring tool for the grid is locked at 5ft and it doesn't look like you can resize the grid. I have also had issues resizing maps to line up with the grid ( assuming the map has an existing grid ). Tabletop Forge does this a little easier as you can add the map at it's standard resolution then either not use the integrated grid, or overlay a grid that you can size as you like ( so it matches the map ). You can also set Token size to re size with the grid as well. Roll20 does have a slick looking interface and seems to work pretty well. You can use it with their own video chat stuff, or you can run it in a hangout. (Note: I might be a bit bias as I'm part of the Tabletop Forge team, however feel free to take a look at it as well, and give us some feedback. We want to really push the system agnosticness ( is that a word, the red squiggly says no ). So anything you would like to see let us know on G+ ( i'm configuring a bug tracker on the web page now

Ok small lie. You can resize the grid. I missed that option on the first pass. You just do it in relation to inches.

We tried to use map tool once in a googly plus hangout. It sure didn't work for me. I got a picture, and then the rest of it was nothin but white boxes. I'm looking forward to further progress from map tool, but that's why I kept looking

I didn't know maptool ran in google+ hangouts. Wow. I know roll20 can but you have to launch it from their site ( there is a link, that opens the plugin in the hangout ). Tabletop Forge can launch just by opening the extension.
Do you have a link on the maptool google+ one? I'd like to take a look.

Sounds groovy! (I really did mean to read the site more carefully, but I had to run out.)

I was wondering about the card deck tool ( because I haven't tried to tool out with others yet ). When I draw a card it doesn't seem to show up in the chat log like the die rolls do. Are all card draws private? Is there a way to change that?

No, it seems to display on the map area for everyone...so far. I am seeing some crazy glitches though throughout, so...
