I watched the first 2 seasons of SW Rebels and Darth Maul was limping around in that quite a bit, but no mention of how he survived. There's an episode where they explain it. I forget what that explanation was, but it was in there.

Its a really good point of Clone Wars with the Witches and Sauvage Opress. Brothers -Darth Maul ReturnsSounds like Ron Howards son is a big Star Wars fan and it was at his request that Howard had Q'ira 's secret boss turn out to be Maul.

Hold on? The internet is saying it’s crap? Not the entire Internet, natch, but some vocal pockets I've hyperspaced by.

This movie was a mixed bag for me. I enjoyed all the actors EXCEPT the guy that played Han. I thought it felt very star wars like EXCEPT the sound (Why do all the speeders sound like prius?). I enjoyed the story EXCEPT the parts that felt like you missed things for not watching the cartoons.
I think I need to watch Rebels and see if that helps.

kaitoujuliet I think you'll find yourself saying that more and more as other directors get to take a shot at the world with their own cinematographer. I think there's a "this does/doesn't feel" like SW because we've had the originals around so long they've just become the end all iconic look and feel of what SW means. I look forward to seeing those notions challenged. I feel like they have to if a dozen more movies are on their way and have any hope of being innovative and able to stand on their own. I'm not so sure it's a desirable thing to aim for, personally. If it doesn't look or feel like SW, then what's the point of slapping the SW label on it, except as a cheap ploy to sell tickets?

Watch Clone Wars first - the Rebel's Darth Maul stuff is AFTER Solo Aaron

I liked it, it wasn't 13 Assassins ... er, I mean, Rogue One, but I enjoyed myself. I thought the guy playing Lando really caught the spirit of the character, and it was nice watching Han become a rogue, and know why it happened.
I also get why big SW fans wouldn't like it. The stakes were small. The fate of the Galaxy never hung in the balance, and that's a departure of every other SW film. I was fine with it. I cared about the characters, which is enoiugh for me.

Yeah but it is very much in the mould of the old canon (now legends). In legends we even had the backstory for the Cantina band. It also reminded me of my favourite early legends stuff with early Han Solo (where we get our first glimpse of The Corporate Sector etc). - Han Solo at Stars End. Aaron

The only thing that I eye-rolled at is that it's 2018 and a conversation between a human and a droid qualified for failing the Bechdel Test.
Ok, for those in the back... female characters can talk to each other about something besides whether or not they like that cute boy... True, is doesn't pass the test. And as much as I support the Bechdel Test I do feel like in this case it was kinda important to establish some character story between L3 and Qi'Ra. They did talk about other stuff in the truly wonderful control room droid riot, but I'm not sure how else we could get the "realization moment" from Qi'Ra that she does still feel for Han. But I don't write for Star Wars, something a lot of criticizing Star Wars fans seem to forget.

I LOVED Han Solo at Star's End when I was a youngster. I wore out my copy.

I cared about the characters, which is enoiugh for me. This was one of the things I loved about it. Sure, it had big characters important to the later story, but it showed depth to the Star Wars Universe and that you can tell a compelling story about other things than the Empire vs Rebellion. My wife and I both loved the film for many of the reasons stated in this thread, and we're both big Star Wars fans (she even used to do video game design for Lucas Arts); we saw it twice in the theater, which is big for us, as we barely get to go see movies (still haven't seen Avengers or Deadpool 2).

1. I was hoping for a bit more Ocean's 11 or Leverage in space--more con work, elaborate plans, and split-second timing. Instead, it was mostly just explosions, chases, and fight scenes. Which were entertaining, so I'm not complaining too hard. But it does make me look forward even more to Ocean's 8.When I first saw Solo, I had a similar reaction.... However, as I thought about it, I believe that would have been a mistake. Take a look at core movies. Solo isn't a Oceans/Leverage style criminal. He's always trying to be.... but always seems to have to go all "Smash and Grab". It's all big grand schemes that go awry.

True, but he was going to be the rookie in this situation. He could've been working with more sophisticated planners, maybe doing some of the stuff where subtlety wasn't needed. Or he could have messed up their careful schemes and decided that style just wasn't for him. But, eh, it's a small complaint from me. Solo was still fun, and I got Ocean's 8 a few weeks later, so I'm happy.
