Here is an attempt by remembering what transpired at Gamex 2018. Not only did I do some RPGs, I also crossed over to the dark side (board games):
RPG things that happened:
Sat - 9 am - Wild Talents w/ Kimi
So this was a Supers game with 6 players. While we had pre-gens, each character's name, description/appearance, passion and usually the top third of your character sheet. So we did have some time to customize our characters. Note: if you come to play in a Kimi-run RPG, be prepared to describe what your character looks like. Also, if it's a superhero game, you will describe your costume.
As far as the game itself, it was a good mix of some combat and some detective/investigation gameplay. While I was more of a secondary character, my son got a lot of time in the spotlight because his character had research skills. As every other Happy Jacks game that I've played, it was a super fun table - the session flew by and I was sad when the session ended.
A word on Wild Talents: I was very intrigued by the dice mechanic. So intrigued, that I bought the book and am thinking about running it for my home group.
Favorite thing that happened: During the investigation, we figured out who was pulling the strings. We went to find her at her apartment, but she had already been kidnapped. We discovered that, while her place was ransacked, the kidnappers left her cat. My son wanted to take the cat with us. Fast forward to the end battle, where we find the lady who was actually a victim in all this (mostly). During the stress of the combat, she starting to have a breakdown:
Crazy Lady: "I don't know where I am, what's going on, who these guys are who kidnapped me, and I don't know where in the world my cat is?"
Thunderous (my son): "Oh, he's right here."
Crazy Lady: "Oh, thank god!"
Sunday
9am: 5E in Middle Earth, Four players
The party: Hobbit, 2 dwarves, human fighter from Laketown
We found work escorting a merchant and his son through Mirkwood. We ended up fighting some orcs, visiting the elves (we got thrown out when the hobbit went wandering), I went crazy (think full blown Boromir), ran into Saruman (when he was still good) and he cured my shadow sickness. We then had two very intense encounters with a Barrow-wight and some kind of evil Treant. I enjoyed our DM very much and he did a great job with his descriptions to evoke Middle Earth.
The System: I like this extension to 5E where they have changed almost every class, added some skills, and there are mechanics to empower some very interesting things that can happen on a journey through Middle Earth. Also, there is a 7th attribute, Shadow. Basically, your sanity.
Favorite thing that happened: When we going thorugh Mirkwood, I failed a save and my Shadow went up enough to make me insane, to which the DM replied, "Holy Shit!". When that happens, I get to come up with a way to have a breakdown at a dramatic moment. Truth be told, I never got to do it, because on the next journey roll, my roll dictated that we meet someone from the book/movie and it was Saruman. After some role-play about my destiny, he cured me.
It was a very fun game.
2pm: Mine eyes have seen the glory, GURPS (Yeah!) with MMMMOOOOKKKKK!
The party is a recently formed posse when the goal of bringing back the bad guys- dead or alive. This is my third time playing with Mook and it is always a great time. Compared to my last two, it wasn't as combat heavy as the previous two games. It was a good thing because during the session, it became more of a "strangers in a strange land" game. I personally had a lot of fun playing a cowboy who is on the verge of going insane based upon all the weird shit that is going on.
The system: What can you say about GURPS? I love it! I love crunchy systems.
Favorite things that happened: 1. I cracked up Mook (I think) multiple times during the session. Regardless of anything else, I count that as a win. 2. Another player having an epiphany of what the hell is going on, something like "OH MY GOD! I KNOW WHAT'S HAPPENING!". It was awesome.
Non-RPG Stuff:
The theme of this con for me: I made some friends downstairs in the Open Gaming.
Friday afternoon, my son and I played some DC the Deckbuilding Game. And these two guys were "I've always wanted to try that. Would you teach it to us?" To which I said yes. I ended up spending the rest of Friday night playing games with them. During the games, they asked if I played RPGs and what would be the best way to find players in their area, To which I replied, "Let me tell you about this great RPG podcast you should check out..."
Saturday night: I ended up signing up for Clank in Space in the Collectibles room. I had a wonderful game even though it was super-intense. These guys came to play. I brought my own copy and the organizer (Karla) was super-appreciative.
Sunday night: After my two RPGS, I ran into a guy I had talked to at the Sat night Clank in Space and he invited to play again. It was a 2 hour game, but his group was also asking about how to start playing RPGs. To which I replied, "Let me tell you about this great RPG podcast you should check out..."
It was a great con and thank you to everyone that makes it possible.
Goal for next con: PLAY ARTEMIS!
