We had Lisa, the ghost of a hippie girl who’d died in the dorm in 1968 (my character), Chad Bradington, a werewolf, and Mara, a ghoul. The backstories came together that Chad was the one who killed Mara and made her a ghoul. Chad was wolfed out and not in control of himself, and killed Mara and her step-mother a few months before the start of the game. For some unknown reason, Mara came back to life before anyone else knew she was dead. And now they're in the same dorm, just down the hall from each other! Chad doesn't know that he is Mara's killer, but was intrigued because of her familiar smell. Mara doesn't know how she came back to life, but her mother's life insurance policy helped pay for her college, so her death also in a twisted way provided for her future. My ghost haunts the dorm floor, and Mara knows she's a ghost and how she died, but my ghost does not know. So Mara has that over her. Mara's player came up with something but naturally didn't tell me.
As a monster type, ghouls have hungers, and Mara's hunger is for plunder. She craves material possessions, trying to fill the hole where her soul used to be with things she feels she deserves to have.
Chad, the werewolf, is prone to outbursts and violence, but can also be protective of those he brings into his 'pack. '
Lastly, my ghost is something of a quiet wallflower, of course. She doesn’t show herself often and is not assertive at all. I figured it was a good choice for a GM player-character so she would be unobtrusive and not always part of things.
The group went with my idea of setting the game at Miskatonic University in Arkham, and Mr. Lovecraft is the Resident Director. He somehow knows the characters are monsters, and put them all on the same floor of the same dorm for... his own reasons. Although he has a human guise Mr. Lovecraft is a Slenderman-like eldritch being with his own agenda. Perhaps he is one of the thousand forms of Nyarlathotep? Maybe it was he who was responsible for bringing Mara back for some reason? Most of the other residents of that dorm floor are monsters as well, with a few displaced and outnumbered normal people. Mara knows that Chad is a werewolf (he killed her, after all) and that Lisa is a ghost, but Chad is unaware that they are a ghoul and a ghost, respectively.
We ended the session with a confrontation between Mara and Chad, in which Mara got up in Chad's face and told him that he owes her a lot, more than he could ever know. He responded by lashing out physically, punching a wall but startling Mara so much that she fell backwards down a stairwell and was knocked out. He immediately came out of his rage and ran to help her, and carried her back to her dorm room. Meanwhile, one of the other dorm residents saw him carrying her, and filed that tidbit of gossip away for later.
Another thing that happened is that Mara's roommate is a witch who was burning white sage in her room to ward off spirits. Lisa (my ghost) tried to get Mara to get rid of the roomie's white sage, and Mara made a counteroffer... if Lisa found her nice shiny trinkets to satisfy her "plunder" huger, Mara would get rid of the anti-ghost paraphernalia.
Oh yeah, and thanks to his heightened senses, Chad overheard the deal-making between Lisa and Mara, and knows something's up with both of them.
Those are just the highlights, of course... we played about 3+ hours.
