Everything around her seemed surreal, disjointed, with the sharp edges and too much color, "This has to be a dream." It took a moment or two for her eyes to focus on the ceiling of her bedroom, her brow furrowing because something just didn’t look quite right. Shimmers of orange flickered over the ceiling, “This has to be a dream,” she repeated.
“Who are you trying to convince, dear?” It interested her that the narrator of her own dream had Helen Mirren’s voice.
Michaela considered that for a moment, “Well, nobody really, this has to be a dream doesn’t it? I mean it can’t be real.” It wasn’t entirely unheard of for her to talk to herself.
“Well, if not, then who is it you’re talking to, Archangel?” Hellen Mirren’s voice went on in a reasonable motherly tone.
“Uhmmmmm… How am I supposed to know?” Michaela imagined that her brows were furrowed in consternation as she tried to work through that one.
“This is your dream after all.”
“But, ok fine, what are you doing here then?” in her dream she cocked her head to the side one golden eyebrow arching the way she did when someone said something particularly dumb.
“I’m here to wake you up.”
“You’re here to wake me u…”
The flickering orange on her ceiling grew more pronounced which bothered her because that wasn’t right, it was night, she was sure of that. But, here was a sooty orange glow rippling across her ceiling like flames. Flames?
“WAKE UP!!!!!”
In the moment that her eyes snapped open she realized that the sooty orange flickering glow rolling across her ceiling really was there, and it was accompanied by the smell of smoke. Throwing back the covers and rolling to her feet she covered the distance to her open window, her eyes smarting and stinging in the smoke rolling from the building across the street, flames spreading quickly upwards windows shattering with sharp detonations. Already she could hear shouts from the street, and more importantly screams of panic and fear from inside the building. “Oh bollocks,” the fire heated air caressed her naked skin, there really wasn’t time to suit up for this.
Movement down on the street caught her attention as several shadowy forms moved away from the burning building with petrol cans which they were loading into a van. Their furtive looks back at the building told her that they were somehow involved with the burning.
“Damn!” three steps back from the window, a running start, and a powerful launch into the air five stories up from the pavement below. Fortunately, it was night and unlikely that anyone would notice which window or even which building she’d come from. Large white and gold feathered wings unfurled with a snap from her back catching the air and beating strongly as she arrowed across the space …
GeneX is a modern-day supers game using the Cortex Prime system. Our game is set in the UK and sets out to explore the ramifications of racism and dealing with people who are different. It’s been 10 years since the X gene was identified as the source of people with unusual powers. Nobody has been able to replicate the X gene in any laboratory or explain why it happens. It is considered by the scientific community to be a mutation. Some conservative and religious groups have declared that those with the X gene are evil, or just dangerous. There have been incidents, and there has been retaliation. Tensions have increased and grown more fractious between X’s and normal.
It should be noted here that neither the gm, nor any of the players are from the UK. We chose the UK for our game because we felt like it was under-represented in super hero games. Please understand that we all have the utmost of respect for the UK and hope to do it and the good people of the UK justice in our attempts to represent it and them. If we err it is not through anything other than our ignorance. We hope that you enjoy our game.
Cheers,
