I hope this has not been brought up before... Does anyone else think the term "Clan Champion" is weird? I am wondering if it just a hold over from the original card game (traits). It seems to me that the Emperor would confirm the clan Daimyo and the champion would be decided by the Clan as its "greatest fighter", kind of like the emerald or jade champions. To prevent confusion there are a number of Daimyos within a clan, one for each family. The leader of the ruling clan would be the Clan Daimyo i.e. Hida or Doji.

Yes it’s weird, and yes, it’s likely a hold over from when L5R tournaments affected the narrative of the RPG, but it IS corrrect, and part of the lore. From the fourth edition rulebook “The samurai caste itself is, of course, divided into social ranks of its own – the Kuge (nobility) and the Buke (those who serve). The Kuge include the Emperor, the various high Imperial officials and daimyo, the Clan Champions who rule over the various clans of the Empire, and the daimyo of the various families within each clan.”

It is weird that Clan Champion really means Clan Daimyo.
I'm just going with it.

I'd always assumed it was to honour the tournament of the Kami to become emperor but now that it has been mentioned it does seem weird.

As mentioned above, it’s from the lore, but when you think about it, using the term ‘Clan Champion’ immediately lets everyone know who you’re referring to. ‘Clan Daimyo’ could be any of a number of family daimyo; there are may clan daimyo, but only one Clan Champion.

I know it is not scripted, but i swear i have heard the exact same thing at least once each session.
Stork: I had to cut off my wife's head Kimi: She committed Seppuku, you were her second. Stork: Yes, a second has to cut off the head of the someone committing seppuku, unless they are not allowed to commit seppuku Kimi: Like my Father
Then Stork usually follows up with, "It was my job." and the cycle repeats. It's pretty funny.

What concerns me is that in nearly every session, there's a cycle of poor Stork suggesting something in character (which is his way) and the rest of the party disagreeing (for good reasons, generally), then Stork trying to explain it another way, and everyone disagreeing with him again, and so on and so forth. It wastes a lot of time and effort on everyone's part and to be fair, there's a bit of confusion on how the society and setting works, but L5R doesn't need to be that confusing. It's becoming somewhat noticeable (or maybe that's just me). It feels like Stork needs to let things go a bit sooner, and everyone else needs to cut him a bit of slack (although I'm still confused as to how Stork cannot have some basic knowledge about the setting, given his comments on the podcast about checking out the L5R wiki, etc, but my memory isn't the best either so I suppose that might forgiveable).

Yeah I've noticed that as well and it is a little irritating.
On the topic of setting knowledge that is something that I find is quite annoying. I try and not let it bother me given Stu is trying to do his own take on Rokugan and I don't want to sound like that guy ranting about people playing it wrong but I do wonder whether a wider knowledge of the setting would help. Will be interesting to see how the addition of Jim impacts the game, it seems he has already had to explain a number of elements of the setting.
