...Kimi's character being asked to help the champion's son to become a man. ("Try not to kill him.") L5R is just a goldmine for immature giggles Also, I let out a silent scream when Stork said that they could linger in the keep for three days tops. THAT'S NOT THE DRAMATICALLY APPROPRIATE AMOUNT!!!

Man, the part I almost screamed about was when they got to talking about how raises 'worked'. No. No no no no no nooooooooo. Nope. Everything was wrong. I've gotten very good at just blowing past rules getting screwed up horribly in HJ stuff, but this one was so simple and basic and ... almost (but not quite) fundamental to the game that it set my teeth on edge.

Someone, I forget who, said that for every five you roll over your TN, you get a raise. Raises give you extra dice for your next roll.
Except, no. No they don't. If you declare raises ahead of time, it increases the TN by 5 per raise, which can have a variety of effects, including (but very much not limited to) extra dice for damage. Plus, since it raises the TN, by declaring raises you can end up failing on what would have otherwise been a successful roll if you hadn't declared them.
Also Kimi picked up a bunch of free raises from a good Iaijutsu roll, which were just given as free dice on the following roll ... except that's definitely wrong too. They basically work like regular raises, without raising the TN. OR they can lower the TN by 5 each. A handful of free raises like she got (I think she got something like four) could turn a TN 20 roll into a TN0 gimme ... unless there's a limit to how low you can go. I'd need to actually dig the book back out to check on that.

I actually did reverse the way Raises worked when I ran 7th Sea, as I found it more fulfilling to give a feel-good effect on a good roll than a "meh" factor when you upped your TN and then missed. Different design ethos.

I'm a sucker for a good Bordeaux. If you have not started down that path Stu Venable, I envy you the wonderful taste experiments you have before you. OTOH, I guess I could just go back and drink all my favourites all over again...

Different design ethos. Well yeah, that's Seventh Sea. It should have been designed that way from the start, it fits the feel so much better.
But for L5R? Mmmm... I like the importance of knowing your limits, and punishing those whose ambition outstrips their capacity.

I quite like Sir Guido's house rule that calling a raise before the roll works as normal but every 10 over the TN after the roll also counts as a raise. Helps keep those explosion rolls interesting.

Hmm. Good point. Didn't think of that. Yeah, maybe it does fit L5R.

Huh, I had not thought of that option. azhreivep is unto something important, though, that I had missed. Does it fit the setting? I am a sucker for rewarding exploding dice since my (not so) humble beginnings playing MERP/RM.

I feel like it does as it makes massive explosions worth it. I've seen people roll triple explosions against tns of around 15 before and there is something disheartening about rolling that far over if it doesn't actually matter.
I also think it plays into the aspect of characters sometimes achieving the impossible which fits with the legendary heroes aspect of the setting
