Now we turn to our live coverage of the X-registry opening ceremony at Thames House. Sir Thomas Cornwall (Conservative Party, House of Lords) is about to begin his speech before those assembled.
Lord Beith, thank you for the lovely introduction.
I was asked before I stepped up to the podium, “Why did you come here to speak on what is perhaps the most controversial and divisive topic of our time?” Well, simply put, I requested of Parliament that I be directed towards any event as long as these three conditions were met.
1) I’m sick of talking about Brexit. So don’t ask. It’s done, let us make the best of it.
2) Don’t schedule it while the cricket match is on, if possible. Or at the very least don’t tell me the score.
3) Allow me the opportunity to provide comfort and leadership to my constituency and Great Britain at large.
If I lack the courage and conviction to address the most difficult challenges our great nation faces, I am unworthy to bear the mantle of Peer of the Realm. In living up to the standard set in great precedence by my fellows, I stand before you today to speak to you about the X-gene, those who bear the burden of its manifestation and how we as a society, culture and people can govern the effects of these manifestations, maintain the personal freedoms we hold so dear and create a safer, more prosperous nation.
As I wrote this speech, I consulted with those closest to me for guidance. Even in my personal thoughts, I know the value of having several contributing points of view. Truth does not come from a vacuum and it cannot be conjured by imagination. It must be discovered, laid bare and exposed for all to see.
When I asked my father, the Major General what I should say or even if I should accept the offer to speak he reminded me of a thought most important to someone born into my station. He told me that I was born into great privilege as a Cornwall, but that privilege comes at a cost. Everything we have, everything we are, comes at the cost of service to Great Britain and its people. Power must be wielded with humility, honor and wisdom. Adherence to this most important principle is the finest distinction British Nobility bears.
I spoke to my brother, Dr. Cornwall, a man of science and he also had a very important point to make. He made the same point Churchill made in that fear is our real enemy. The only way to combat fear, is through understanding. That is to say, that we must face this issue head on. We must seek to understand what we can about it and in so doing eradicate our fear of this X phenomena though the power of empathy. That is not to say that this issue stops posing a threat only if better understood, but we will be better equipped to make more informed choices and with that, better ones.
The crisis of our time has not been seen since Neanderthal and Homo-sapiens fought for supremacy. It is a fundamental change in what we consider to be human. With these changes we are challenged to find a way to coexist with these new Homo-sapiens-X in a way where lives are enriched and personal freedoms protected.
In those two conversations I managed to cut to the core of this issue and I would like to share those conclusions with you today, the first day of the voluntary X-Registry.
The fundamental truth here is that we now have among us people capable of incredible things. Feats, previously relegated to the stuff of legend just a few years ago are now possible and even commonplace. Those who wield this power must be made to understand that they have a responsibility to their fellow man to use that power for the benefit of all or at least to the detriment of none. Yet, there will always be those who think selfishly and seek to use these powers to harm or undermine others. This is not a concept alien to us. Technology has given individuals the ability to be incredibly destructive. This, coupled with creativity have been responsible for countless atrocities and the powers wielded by X’s are no different. The choices we make now will mirror the choices we made after the invention of the hand gun or plastic explosive for instance. We are a people made of sterner stuff. Dealing with those who would spread fear at the cost of freedom has been part and parcel to being British since the days of Guy Fawkes and we have and will continue persevere.
The only way to approach this is to understand who these individuals are and what they are capable of. Not so they may be treated as second class citizens, not to persecute and disenfranchise, but to bring peace of mind to those who live along side our X community. To ensure that these incredible people can be offered the opportunity to create peace, understanding and cooperation. To be given the opportunity to build a better world for all, out of the shadows in the bright sunlight of understanding. Our intent is not to monitor or persecute, but to live our lives with a better understanding of the forces surrounding us.
So, in the final analysis we are presented with choices as is right for any Democracy. The choice between fear, ignorance and hate versus enlightened discourse, truth and compassion. To bridge this divide will take understanding and compromise from both sides of the issue. The one thing I know and the singular faith which summons in me a great swell of pride is that the citizens of the British Commonwealth are proud, strong, wise and kind. With that, I see a bright future for us all. God bless the Queen, God bless Great Britain and God be with us a……
