I was reading through my copy of Deluxe edition and came up on the Ganging Up rule. I don't know if someone already came up with this (probably since I am in SW lands here) but I found a way to reduce the impact of this rule in game. I will test this house rule in my next game I think.
1) Not all attackers receive the ganging up bonus.
2) The GM (or the players) receive a +1 for every character ganging up but only get to give this bonus to one attacking character.
3) Alternatively the GM (or the players) can distribute this bonus between the attackers.
Notes
A) Since the ganging up bonus apply for additional attacker, the total bonus will always be [number of adjacent attackers] -1.
So if four pirates attacks a PC, the GM only have +3 to play with. He can give it to one pirate, or distribute it amongst the group.
B) Three attackers will thus give a +2 bonus corresponding to a easy task, but only one time and not at the expenses of the heroes.

Interesting ideas Seb, I am very interested to see how they play out.
Cheers,
