My experience with Burning Wheel is hearing reviews through podcasts and they all seem to run along the same lines as Happy Jacks it is a love or hate it system.
I had thought about getting the Mouse Guard Box set at one point. The reviews were so polarized I decided against it.
There is a new game on the horizon based on the Mouse Guard system. It's old news but I hadn't heard anything about it, but there is a Dark Crystal rpg due out in August.
If you are around my age you probably think "awesome", if you are an older grognard that thinks Star Wars was boring B-movie then you could probably pass and should just drink your Ensure while talking about the bygone days when polyhedron dice were hard to find.
But I will be as giddy as Jib if I can play a little potato-looking guy riding a giant long legged rabbit.
Then I wonder why do I get so excited about new games when I don't have time to play the games I have.
If this game is half a beautiful as I imagine it could be then it will be my first Burning Wheel purchase. Then I guess I'll find out whether or not this is a system I can run.

Me giddy? Are you daft man?
Though the idea of a Dark Crystal game is stylistically intriguing, I would probably do it in some other game system.
I have been thinking about doing a Redwall based game at some point, though now that I'm 2k miles away from my kids and they're all grown and jaded it probably will never happen unless I take another bash at doing a kids game at a con. The last one went so well (not) that I am dubious.

JiB I would have said giddy as a schoolgirl, but I thought that would be a little more giddy than that, but not quite as giddy as Tappy's "AHHHMMMAAAZINNGG!" You should go back and listen to the first time few times you were on the podcast. It might have been a long time ago for you, but for me it was last month. Don't be offended it is part of your charm. ;D As far as doing it in another system, it's part of my quandary. In the end I do like to read other systems and if I hate the system it's possible I could use it as a resource guide to port it into another system. However in retrospect I am not a hardcore homebrew-er I might tweak something here or there, but I am really not the type to run the Firefly setting with Dogs in the Vineyard rules. I have started work on such projects then quickly get distracted by something new that is already done. I do really like the idea of Dark Crystal for one small reason, no humans. It is a completely alien world and I don't think I have ever played in a world like that. Why wouldn't you run Redwall for adults? I would play bipedal ferret.

I think I can take a stab at what system you'd run that Dark Crystal game in, JiB. As for why we get excited about new games? Well, new things are exciting. We all have "Gamer ADD" to one degree or another.

The idea of a Redwall RPG is intriguing. I'm thinking it would play really nice in any system which supports the creation of racial templates - to really show the differences between mouse, badger and hare party members.

I would be shocked that anyone would refer to me as giddy, but ok if that's what I sound like I'm not offended.
I would totally run a Redwall game for adults I just conceived it for my kids when the idea first came into my head. (I would totally want to play a Scottish Badger)
I could run it in Savage Worlds, Hero or GURPS without breaking too much of a sweat in any of the three cases.
Cheers,
JiB

Cheers, JiB It's also worth noting I tend to exaggerate and I will punch someone in the arm instead saying I like them. So in all seriousness JiB is not very giddy. Do you think Hero or GURPS would be a little to deadly for a Redwall game though? I read a couple of the books years ago and just don't remember it being that deadly.

While Hero and GURPS (in particular) are intrinsically on the more deadly scale, they don't have to be. The advantage in either Hero or GURPS would be the ease with which you can create custom things like races (for example). That said, it would probably be in Savage Worlds because, well, Savage Worlds is awesome and fun and easy. Cheers, JiB
