So a group of hipsters try to define D&D/role-playing with the help of the Happy Jacks crew. www.densepop.com/dense-pop-episode-01-dungeons-and-dragons/And end up defining American Football as a L.A.R.P. 19:22 I notice the men are older than the women who are interviewed on this podcast, which anecdotally blows the theory about which gender matures quicker (breast growing aside).

I listened to a portion of this podcast, and I really hate the way they fade in and out of audio tracks mid conversation. Also, what is the podcast about? They don't know enough about D&D to be gamers, so it's not a gaming podcast...is it like a pop culture podcast that focuses on ...not-pop-culture?

It's a podcast about pop-culture and things that are "of interest" to them.
Their first cast was about D&D and among other for it they interviewed Stu, Stork, Bill and m'self. Due to time constraints and well let's be honest Stu, Stork and Bill are much more interesting than I am the only time I appear on the cast is a bit during the intro.
Cheers,
JiB

Or the dream that one day any one of us "listeners" could make our way on the podcast. And where would these so-called podcasters be without the mighty wordsmith JiB? Okay Bill would probably be fine...

I kind of agree. I got halfway through it yesterday before turning it off. I'll slap it into my iPod and try again later because everyone deserves a second chance, but I'm not really digging the scripted nature of the show. I've tried listening to other podcasts, and there a few that I like, but if you take too long to get to the "good stuff", I'm out. I'm not going to sit there for 20 minutes and listen to the hosts talk about what they did last week, especially if it has absolutely nothing to do with gaming. Unless they're side-splittingly funny while doing so. Like HappyJacks. ;D

Hey Everyone,
My name's Charlie. I made the podcast, DENSE POP.
Judging from the posts here, it sounds like it wasn't well received.
Sorry, you didn't enjoy it.
To address some questions I saw in this thread:
-The podcast is not meant for a gamer audience, more for general audiences (My aim is to try and introduce obscure stuff to the general audience, and encourage them to delve deeper if they find something they like).
-As for how I picked the podcast, I've been a long time fan of the podcast, and have been a table top gamer since I was a kid. First started playing when the original red box came out, and then moved on to AD&D, and then ended up switching over to the Hero system with Champions. Just recently got back into D&D with 3.5 and now 4th. Also love old school stuff like Star Frontiers and Top Secret on occassion (when I can black mail my friends into playing). I really loved the Happy Jacks RPG and they always had some of the most knowledgeable discussions on RPG's and D&D and also with the extensive experience of Stu, Stork and everyone, I thought they would be a great pick. Also they have terrific voices and really good online presence and charisma (I'd say at least 17 on air).
-Unfortunately I did run out of time and so I did cut Jib, which was unfortunate. Sorry Jib, but you are definitely interesting and I do still enjoy listening to you here very much so
-The scripted nature of the show is deliberate, as the series will continue with an actual story line! Yes an actual story will unfold every other episode (it's kind of experimental and yes, weird.) Scheduled to do a regular episode about a topic for one episode and then a narrative (think radio drama) episode after each one.
Again, I was very grateful when the Happy Jacks agreed to be interviewed. I really did do my best to make them shine, and I think they were quite good in it.
So apologies that if you disliked the podcast, and hope you at least enjoyed the parts that the Happy Jacks were featured in it. I was planning on releasing the full interviews with everyone in the future as extras for the website.
As for being a hipster, I think I'm a bit old and don't quite fit that (I'm 40 and an ex-Marine), but I do use too much hair product (can't help it, old Azn dudes like me were raised on that stuff).
Anyways, thanks for trying it out! And of course thanks again to everyone at Happy Jacks for being so generous with your time, you guys rawk!
Sincerely, Charlie Yi Owner/Host Densepop.com

Charlie,
No worries at all. I had fun doing it. I would absolutely have gone with Stu, Stork and Bill's parts as well.
I enjoyed the show. Will it become a staple for me to listen to? Maybe not, don't know yet. Obviously no show is going to be for everyone, but I wouldn't let that get to you. It was fun and I think you'll have an audience.
Cheers,
JiB

Hey Charlie, Kudos for throwing yourself out there.
I thought the scripted stuff was a tad odd, but curious to see how the radio serial idea will play out.
As is said on the podcast, "If you are having fun, you are doing it right" and you the ladies seem to be having fun, so keep it up man.

Sincerely, Charlie Yi Owner/Host Densepop.com Hi Charlie, Your approach to your target was spot on and I have shared your podcast with people looking to do something that will put themselves closer to meeting new people and developing friendships. Tabletop RPGs are gold in this regard. So I was quite satisfied with what you accomplished and enjoyed the ride. The structured nature of the show, the railroad, was entertaining and easy for newbies to follow, reminiscent of public radio theatre cuts. I cannot bring newbies uninitiated to the hobby to a HappyJacks podcast because of the unscripted sandbox nature of the show. It is fun to listen to the hosts have a good time but for people new to the hobby it would sound like people laughing at their own jokes. Newbies might feel alienated. I am a fan of this podcast, and grok the banter, so I was really happy with the amount of air time you devoted to the HappyJacks A-Team. I was especially happy to hear the well-educated addiction psychologist alongside the trucking professional and set designer vocations represented by the players, not only because it was an inside scoop for me to glimpse the off-air lives of the hosts I enjoy but also because it opened up the stereotype of who can play an RPG. Now that you have mentioned that there will be some running drama, I am likely to follow along for at least a time. I do like me some old time radio. And cheer up. You're never too old to be somebody's hipster. Thanks for making that loving podcast.

Whoa! I would not have guessed that based on your voice. LOL. I listened to the episode again after reading your comments Charlie, and really, really liked the episode now. I think what I was missing the first time around was some context. It's like taking a sip of what you think is black coffee and getting a mouthful or Coke. You brain goes "Ahh! WTF is this?!" and you're disoriented for a bit. I like the idea of a serial "radio drama" podcast with an overarching plot and a cast of characters. I don't think that's said anywhere on your page or mentioned in the actual episode though. If you're not expecting a "radio drama" style of presentation (like me) it's really jarring. Given the bad sound and production quality of some other podcasts I've listened to, at first I thought you guys were literally standing outside on the street waiting for the hosts to show up, and then literally recording the episode in a bar. So a big kudos to your sound engineer for making it sound real, but unless you know it's staged it almost sounds too real. Now that I know it's a radio drama, it fits perfectly and I like it. But when I thought it was a more "traditional" podcast I thought "I don't need to listen to the hosts get ready for the episode and discuss how people are late". I've actually heard other podcasts do that for real and it drives me insane. Maybe some kind of audio bumper or introduction to explains what the show is and it's format would help. It's kind of like looking at modern art. Once you understand what the artist was going for, it's easier to appreciate the piece. Keep it up! I'm looking forward to the next episode.
