Episode 6 is posted in the first post of this thread. Woot! Loving the L5r Aps. Not only is it a nice change of pace from the typical goblin filled dungeon crawl, I think it really helped me grasp the system mechanics before I ran my First session ( which was also inspired by yous guys). Kudos to Mike, Stu, and the HJ all the players.

Super excited for the newest episode, already amused by the gender/shugenja stereotype as most every guy in my group all want to play shugenja; though confused as to why a lady playing a rogue would cause a gender shitestorm; aren't all ladies chaotic evil rogues?

Just wanted to drop you all a quick line to say I've been enjoying the game a lot. Like in the Inukai game, it's always entertaining for long-time fans of the setting like me to see/hear people experiencing it as something new. Hope you're all having as much fun as it sounds, and it continues for a while.
2 quick points:
1- One of the guys in my group was RokuRaging over an apparent answer to one of the questions during the TC tourney in which either seppuku or execution was referred to as a greater punishment than being cast out as ronin. I couldn't remember the soundbite he was referring to, and the chances that he was drunk and/or wrong are decent, but his fury compelled me to bring it to your attention. Death before dishonor and whatnot.
2- Do the Utaku still demand that anyone marrying one of their samurai-ko take the Utaku name? Didn't know if that had carried over from previous editions. TC the Ego Supreme having to take his lady's name would be AMAAAAZING.

It makes his dislike for her so much deeper...it also adds some RP implications that might not even have been considered before. Joking aside, the TC is a Really Big Deal. With that in mind, agreeing to marry off the winner of the tournament to a bride who would take some of the glory he's gained away from the Crab would seem to indicate that Crab/Unicorn relations were in need of some serious strengthening and/or patching up. There could be an entire campaign arc exploring why.

Man I hope so. My understanding of Rokugan is pretty spotty as you mentioned. While this makes for some great non meta-game moments as our characters learn info as WE (PC's) learn it it also makes for some painful wandering around..."What the shit do I do now?" non-action episodes.
I don't want to get hit up head with a +5 Vorpal Plot Clue Bat but yikes I really don't think I am getting what is expected of me as a Yuriki (sp?) and as the Topaz Champion.
It sucks that I will have to miss the next two episodes (going out to sea on research trip). Hopefully our positions will make more sense to us the players by the time I hop back in.
Any suggestions of material to read L5R wise ? I am just concerned that my player knowledge is waaaay too far behind my supposed character knowledge.
I hope this isn't a cultural faux pas bringing out my concerns on the HJ's forums for this game. But, I would imagine that for anyone new to L5R this is a likely problem.
Clueless meandering aside I did really enjoy this session going back and listening to it (I'm fortunate to have a found a great group of roleplayers and a GM that knows the world very well) and I think a big part of that enjoyment was focusing on our characters more and less non-game chatter.
However, the plot component of being the Topaz Champion brings up the ugly aspect of hierarchies within a play group as well as the loss of personal choice because of the TC's expected role and expected responsibilities. These are also constant components (it would seem) of L5R. But, a real negative side to this is a heavy emphasis on game time focusing on the leader is the loss of the other PC's time in the limelight. Again, hopefully my stepping away will allow the other's in the group a chance to shine outside of my characters GIANT EGO!
Its this kind of conversation about Actual Plays I would like to see happening more often. Sometimes podcasts fall into the remember that one time ? Uh no...we don't we weren't there. But to have an actual play to listen to and then be able to break it down a bit afterward is very helpful to me. Why did your character do this ? Why as a GM did you decide to focus on this ? What worked for the PC's ? For the GM? What was fun for the listener ? What was lame ?
Alright I've rambled enough (if you listened to the AP you'll know why I rarely play quiet, mysterious types.)
Thanks for the comments!
Curt J.

Death before dishonor and whatnot. Yeah being made a ronin would be the ultimate punishment. If I said otherwise it was a slip on my part. In this case I decided that I wanted to jab the ole TC with a fun complication but I didn't want to badger him down. So she has taken his name, but he has the displeasure of having a Bitter Betrothal to a very very opinionated and capable spouse.

Being realistic and narrowing it down to one book, cover-to-cover, I'd say a read of the Emerald Empire book is enough to give any new player a pretty good understanding of the world and clans. Imperial histories is awesome, too, but there are a lot of young characters who wouldn't necessarily have all that knowledge. All of their 4th ed books have been great so far, but EE is probably the best overview. The L5R wiki is a really good source from all editions and the card game - specific questions you have can get a quick answer from there. If I have any knock on the game, it's that the setting can be a little overwhelming. It takes a good GM to ease players into the culture, and players comfortable enough to ask questions about etiquette and general knowledge without being afraid of embarrassment. You guys are doing a good job. In terms of the role playing, there are some things to remember that might give in-character reasons for not going too crazy in your role as TC. The main one is the fact that it's temporary. Sure, you're Rokugan's It-Girl, but only for this year. Next year, some younger, prettier, white-haired bimbo is going to take your place and you'll turn into Hida "Hey, weren't you that guy?". In the mean time you've earned yourself a place in the Emerald Magistrate organization, but the days of special treatment just because of who you are will end shortly. Another in-character reason is one you've touched on in-game already: while your current position is a prestigious one, it's not one that necessarily feels important to a Crab. Now, a Jade Magistrate hunting down the few shadowlands creatures who manage to evade the forces at the wall or Maho users? That's right up your alley. But enforcing the courtly laws and walking political tightropes? Gee...thanks. So the notion that there are others in your party who are much better suited to this sort of work should be really obvious to the character, and if he wants to bring honor to his family and clan given the position he's been put in, he's going to be really nice, and even deferential, to the people who are better at investigation, courtier skills, etc., than he is. After all, as head Yuriki, he gets the reward for everything the group does as long as he's in charge. If he shows that he's not a capable enough leader to delegate appropriately and allow everyone else's specialty to come into play, he won't be in charge for long. SirGuido - is that (the Utaku name) going to be a special case or are you just not including that particular quirk of the setting in the game?

Its going to be a particular case. In this case, yes she's a battle maiden, but she's from a not so well to do branch of the family. So they felt that marrying her off to the TC would help them out and they got special dispensation from the family daimyo to do it.
